To borrow from "dukeofearl" and his Life Is A Joke post...Sonny should keep this Mark Twain thought in mind when flirting with the waitresses: Last week, I stated this woman was the ugliest woman I had ever seen. I have since been visited by her sister, and now wish to withdraw that statement.. - Mark Twain
I just hauled a load from Camp Hill, PA to Memphis, TN (pd miles- 985). I am now waiting outside the shop- my tractor has an air leak. They won't be able to look at it until tomorrow.
Still in Memphis. They pulled my truck into the shop Saturday night, told me they needed to order a part to fix it. The part came in on Sunday, and I got the truck back Sunday afternoon. I was preplanned on a load that picked up Monday afternoon. When I got up Monday morning, my air tanks were low, so I knew they hadn't fixed the leak. So I un-committed from the preplan and went back into the shop. I got my truck back late last night. Guess where my air pressure was at this morning? I am giving up. Usually the level of incompetence is rather low here in Memphis, but maybe they've hired some new mechanics or maybe they are just having a bad week. It's a slow leak, nothing to be worried over safety-wise. I'm due for a service soon, I'll try to have it fixed again then. I am currently planned on a load that picks up this evening in Ecru, MS going to Houston, TX (pd miles 674). Not quite as good as the load I gave up yesterday (for nothing as it turns out), but still a decent run.
1only I drove for over a week with an air leak. it was a gamble. I didn't get caught. It is fixed now.
I have a question for you: You say when you get up in the morning the air is showing low...needs to fill the tanks...when you sleep are you a "tosser" with a lot of movement, or do you wake in the same position you fell asleep in? the reason I ask this is that when you "toss" in your sleep, you could be causing the cab unit to move...so the air leveler is keeping the cab level. Same thing when there is wind, the movement (rocking) of the cab will cause the air to be drained from a non-charging air tank. (The no idle policy so you aren't charging the air with the compressor.) Also, did they check the leveler arm piece? This can get stuck, or even just need adjustment. Sometimes they just forget about the simple fix!
OHTW, good ideas, but I'm a calm sleeper, and it's been doing it consistently. It will also do it when I'm not in the truck. I can hear the leak when I've got the hood up, I just can't pinpoint exactly where it is.
There is press fit brass fittings on the turbo actuator lines. I had a leak there. They changed the actuator and it still leaked. Petro found the leaking fittings. Same fittings on the air dryer. Junk by design! Is it by the turbo?
The air leak was easy to find. Since it is nice & quiet here at the house, I found it within minutes. I'm not sure how a trained tech with Swift couldn't find it, but then again they work in a noisy enviroment & can't quite quiet everything down to listen for something as simple as an air leak. It is actually the air bag on the passenger side of the sleeper. It is leaking around the seal on the bottom side. I didn't fix it because I'm not going to put my hard earned money into a company truck that doesn't have my companies name on the door. If it was just a simple air hose or fitting, then that wouldn't be a problem.... But those air bags are expensive!
