True,, but I just showed the what happens if the driver does not do anything... how the system is supposed to work in automation.

Well, I'm only familiar with he Omnitracs systems and how ours are provisioned. But from what I'm hearing others are dealing with entirely different setups in different systems. With some, I would not put too much confidence in them working the way you'd like them to so I'm suggesting other actions that might be tried in the event another action [or non-action] doesn't work as desired.

My larger point is don't hesitate to try different actions in different scenarios to see what works and what doesn't, and don't hesitate to be "proactive" in changing the duty status manually at key times to see how those actions work with their system. When you're in a truck stop and have time, experiment and make notes. They all behave differently. In a short time, you'll hopefully find ways you can make minor moves without penalizing yourself. But they won't have signs directing you, you'll just have to go by trial and error and hope future updates don't affect the system in a bad way.

But do you know if all of the systems by various vendors (like JJ Keller versus Rand McNally) work the same in automation?

I tried to say above, no, they don't. Each system will be coded differently and as such will behave differently

I'm up here in Michigan, and I heard through a buddy of mine from one of the larger carriers up here in automotive land, that the Michigan State Police figure around Summer they will be up to speed on these ELDs. That was from my friends safety department. They are trying to get a grip on the inflexibility of the HOS, as drivers are running out of hours sitting in the docks. They needed to know about enforcement, as shutting down one of the Big 3 plants is a very costly proposition.

I suppose we'll be seeing yet another exemption.

I have been late all week due to the ELD and wait times, especially with the Holidays and work schedules. It has not been good, and tempers are flying on both sides. I can see the HOS getting a fix in the coming months. Especially if these plants start going down. Most of the Big 3 are not up to speed yet, many are still retooling. When the economy kicks into overdrive with these new tax cuts, it is going to get very ugly. The suppliers cannot keep up as it is, and we are only running at half speed. Something will need to be done, we need flexibility ;-)

I just installed mine, getting plenty of rest, but I always have. I don't go anywhere, short trips, less than 100 miles, bunk time on the ELD is more than drive time. Problem is scheduling, there is a learning curve, and it is rather inflexible with JIT freight. I need an extra few hours a day... The hours the ELD took away. HOS rules need to be revisited, as this industry is not one size fits all.
