Your welcome. If there is one thing I take very seriously it's high blood pressure. The medication they have today is so far advanced from just 10 years ago that it's almost like not taking any at all. Diet and simple excessive goes a long way in combating this disease.

Just passed my physical today and got a 1 year card . I started taking the meds 3 weeks ago ...Get your BP checked at your doctor and you will be surprised what that little 5 mg pill will do..I know it's helping me. I started feeling better after the fist day.

I feel you did the right thing. You need to get the BP under control before the DOT physical and school. Also, BP meds can make you sick for the first few weeks while your body is getting used to them. I was "sick as a dog" for about a month with strange aches and pains when I first started taking BP meds. The doc said that was normal and wait it out. He was right...

Agreed but the the OP needs to be forewarned that there are different kinds of blood pressure medications and it can take awhile to figure out what is right for him.

Case in point, I started out with Lisinopril, which had no effect. Doc switched me to Atenolol, which worked great but also gave me a side effect called pre-ventricular contractions, which will make you fail the DOT physical instantly. Switched to Verapamil, which worked okay but made me feel a bit stoned. So after all that I'm on Amlodipine and Hydrochlorothiazide and my BP averages 125/75.

Thanks for the replies. I waited because it was 170/114. No way I would pass a DOT physical. So, went to the DR, got meds, started walking, cut out all caffeine, no salt, and now today after only a week its 148/82. I have been border line High BP for years but never paid too much attention. Looked up DOT regs and saw I was in trouble. A week may seem like a waste or as someone said...I was letting the issue get the best of me. I see it that I had an issue and faced it. Now....school is only 2 days away. I also feel much better.

Yeah. Dr mentioned the silent killer thing to me and it hit me. My grandfather, father, and brother all have/had high bp. Im glad I finally found a DR that listened and took charge.

Yeah I have high blood pressure too but a week before getting my DOT physical I jogged every day and ate healthy and got my two year DOT card since I was in excellent health on the day that they checked me. Personally that is why I never take schools or any kind of tests seriously because you can get around all of them. When someone brags about their test scores I know ways to get around them without breaking any rules. For example, I am getting all A's on my trucking tests so far because I just cram and study right before the test and memorize all of the answers while they are in my memory temporarily and forget most of the crap after the test is over and I receive my A+ grade.

Were you on medication for your BP ? If you were the only way you would get a 2 year card was to lie about being on meds . That could get you disqualified somewhere in the future .
Students should also know some carriers will not accept you if you have a one year medical card .

Section 2 HEALTH HISTORY asks if you have had high blood pressure and asks about medication . If you checked no and didn't list the meds you filed false form . http://www.iowadot.gov/mvd/omve/medicalreport.pdf
If by any chance an LEO finds your medication and sees your 2 year card you will be put OOS .
