I'm leaving Sunday morning on a bus to orientation.. The recruiter said I would be out 3 weeks with a trainer and afterwards 40,000 miles teaming then in my own truck.. I think every other company says a few weeks out with trainer then off to your own truck.. I'm wondering did I hear this correctly or did the recruiter not know what she was talking about? lol.. I don't mind this if she is correct because this was only company to give me a shot and I have to get in the door some way, BUT does this sound right?

I don't know about 'most' companies, but the company that I drove for required 5 weeks with a trainer, then an additional 3-5 weeks with either a 'finishing' trainer or another student. In my opinion, 3 weeks with a trainer is not nearly enough experience to turn a driver loose on his/her own. Heck, most people aren't even proficient at shifting at that point.

Usually it's until the trainer tells them you're ready. Maybe it's up until 40,000.

Thanks for the replies.. I know I wouldn't feel comfortable after only 3 weeks of training.. Lol.. It makes me feel better to know that ill have to be out a little longer to try and get a little better at driving before I'm by myself.. It sounds like ill be out at least 10 weeks with someone else which is fine because I need all the practice I can get..

Back in the 90's when I OTR trained drivers that came out of truck schools, I had them for roughly 8 weeks. No mileage requirement. There was no teaming. Training is not properly done when teaming. For sure, when I got done with them, they were more than ready to go on their own. Each carrier has their own way of doing things. It is not uncommon to go out with a trainer for a while, then team with another new driver for a while, then on your own. Concept for the team thing is that two heads were better than one in doing the job early on. Not sure it was valid, but there it is.

Sounds like you're going to Prime? In which case that 40k number is correct.

You'll be better off for it once you're out on your own assuming you get an experienced trainer.

8 weeks is a realistic time frame.

Ok.. Will I make more in my teaming phase than in my training phase.. I'm assuming I would.. I'm starting at .15 per mile for training and the same when I go to the team phase.. Would it be something like .15 x 2500 miles per week training at $375 a week? Then .15 x 5000 miles per week for $750 a week teaming or do I have it all wrong? Lol
