I know in WI you're allowed to use a checklist that'll tell you all the parts, just not what to say you're looking for. I'm not sure you'd need a CDL unless it's for any commercial purpose--otherwise, you've got a very large RV. I'd stop by MDOT and ask before you test that, though.
Did I make a mistake?

I also feel obligated to remind you of Michigan's frost limit laws. I believe you're not allowed to be over 60% of your GVWR, and in my county, not travel over 35MPH on posted roads. You'll see a sign something like "Seasonal Load and Speed Limits in Effect". The fines range in the thousands of dollars.

CDL would be required becasue 1) we will travel accross state lines and 2) be beyond the 150 mile limit for the F endorsement.
Being non-commercial and not for hire will allow us to bypass some restrictions........like no log book required. But I had to get USDOT # and it has to be on the vehicle. I would have to roll through scales and that stuff as well. The yearly DOT inspection is waived for this vehicle though as it is plated as a farm truck.
The RV.....I could head down that path but would have to put a porta pot in the cab. And, the first time I scream by the scales sure as #### the lights will be flashing in my mirror. They probaby could not write a ticket but since I plan on running safe and legal I might as well save the aggrevation and play by their rules and then some. Meaning the only way anyone would know I was a RV was if they pulled me over and like I said, although I don't plan on doing anything wrong, my policy is to avoid putting yourself in contact with anyone who carries a gun, a badge or both.
Frost laws will not come into play for me as I live on a class A road that leads right to the expressway. -
But I agree, it's probably not worth the hassle. It'd be easier on everyone just to get the CDL.

So you think this would get me out of having to get CDL?
Just curious because if I don't have to get one that I won't. -
michigan dot gov website. may have the answer you are wondering about. -
Calling DOT is useless.
1) because DOT can say one thing but that guy with blue says another and guess what....the guy with the blue light will win everytime.
2) Based on the following call I had yesterday with DOT that went something like this:
ME: I am calling about a letter that I received from you that indicated there were more steps in completing the application for my DOT#. I have the # but now the letter says something about any commercial vehicle must be inspected as well.
DOT: That is correct.
ME: Well, this vehicle is not going to be licensed as a commercial vehicle. It will be licensed as a farm vehicle but as I understood the rules I needed to apply for a DOT #, which I have. The only reason I had to get a DOT # is because I will cross state lines.
DOT: That does not matter. Any vehicle used for commerce must be inspected.
ME: I just told you that this vehicle was not going to be used commercially.
DOT: That would be up to the inspector to decide when he comes to inspect the vehicle.
ME: Can I talk to an inspector before going through all of this for nothing?
DOT: I am sorry we do not have any inspectors here. We are just a call center.
You kind of see what I am dealing with here? -
Yes,...You made a mistake..
-
Mistake with what?
If you think I made a mistake on buying the truck I disagree. I posted this thread before I picked her up. I have nothing bad to say about this truck.
I may have made a mistake in dealing with DOT if that is what you mean. -
