Got to comparing '99 379 long hood with a '05 long hood. At first we noticed the shifter came through the floor further back in the'05. Then we looked at the motors and sure enough the '05's motor is tighter against the firewall and has alot of room between fan and rad. Why would Peterbilt do this? Seems to me having the motor further ahead was one of the best attributes of a long hood for better access for repairs and maintenance.
Difference in long hood

Are they both the same distance from bumper to back of cab? Are they the same engine set up?
-
Same bumper to back of cab length, 2ws compared to a mxs. Also a shorter radius 90* elbow coming off turbo, a longer more sweeping elbow would be better for the acert motor.

Iirc the hood is 5 inches longer. They said they did when the emission engines came out due to heat issues

Special-k I believe you are thinking about a 389 compared to a 379. These are both 379's. Fan shroud on 99 is 2" wide compared to about 8" on 05. Back turbo is so close to firewall there's a heat shield for windshield washer tank.

Sorry about that I was thinking an 05 was already a 389. Mu mistake.
Bean Jr. Thanks this.
