Differences Between Layover and Detention

    And this is why I think I will have a bad time going back OTR and not having dedicated lanes. I was getting upset today (well more wondering what is taking so long) at the long time it was taking to get loaded. I was showing 45 minutes sitting in that door.....

    Back in the day the Tariffs worked this way as far as the time billed to a customer who held a truck that arrived as scheduled.

    Holding a unit over night was a forced layover.

    Billing worked this way...

    arrived 0800 as scheduled. 1000 to 1700 detention at standard hourly rate.
    1700 to 0800 flat rate 'forced layover'...
    0801 until empty, back on the hourly detention clock.....

    paying the driver or owner operator was entirely another matter.
