BTW. about steer axes. They are really for good roads. But US roads are not so good as European. and if US highways got good pavement, there are many local roads with bad pavement, bumps and holes. And it is not all, there are many construcktion fields in the USA where semis are used on, so seems to me more simle trailers are better for US operators.

About some advantages of European trailers. in Europe single tires are used, so we have 6 tires per trailer, US trailers are generally 8 wheelers. yep, tire wear in sharp turns is more exessive on European trailers, but we all use lift axe override and use it in sharp curves.

I want to disagry to 98989 about trucktor tandem axe. may be becouse CIS roads are bad and may be covered with snow and ice, but US trucktor runs over bad roads much better and if I tow EU trailer I think nothing about axe weight limits.

There are strong steer axles that are steered via a large pushrod from a turntable over the kingpin, very popular with loggers ! some are designed for motorway work or city deliveries, having one steer axle is Gettin very popular here for fuel and tyre saving, I've seen alot of schmitz euroliner trailers with steer axles on them,

Lift axe with manual overide is more efficient and simple, reliable solution! it is easy to fit it yourself. Wabco ore Knorr Bremse lift axe valve is $100-150 only, work fine in 12V and 24V electrical systems, may be integrated in TEBS easily.

The only mechanical work is to add axe lift air bad with braket, arm and air lines.

We did it with European and US trailers. It is better and cheaper the steer axe

It looks like the big differance in trailers is the amount of cargo and weight that we haul here is much greater than in Europe?
When I use to pull a refer I normally was grossed out at 80,000 lbs all the time. 45-46000 lbs. load.
I pull a tanker now and would be interested to see what the EU tankers are like. The majority of the ones I pull are 7400 gallon stainless insulated chemical with pumps.

The max gross weights here are 97,000 lbs for a semi 132,000 lbs for a double, a normal tanker here is 33,000 l or 8717 us gallons, weight of load in tank will depend on weight of truck and trailer,

hello in my country and most of european countries max allowed weight is 40metric ton or 88200lbs

exception from this are (UK, ireland , itally , luxemburg , belgium , holland, finland, sweden, norway, danmark .....)

average tractor with reffer trailer have payload between 23 and 25 metric tons that is 50700-55100lbs

lightest possible tractor+trailer combination can have up to 27metric ton of payload that is 59500lbs

but they are rare (consisted of lightest possible trailer only inside unit for cooling without diesel aggregate and with electric generator on tractor with payload optimised tractor

our trailers are shorter (45ft) so most of reffer trailers are equipped with 2 floors inside

if you really need more space inside you should use truck+drawbar trailer/centeraxle trailer combination where you can get 51 1/3ft of cargo length

trucks with tarpaulin usually have 26ton of payload or 26.5ton (57400-58500lbs)

lightest possible can have up to 65000lbs
but that is rare (consisted of lightest possible trailer -berger and payload optimised tractors) most of european countries gives you a tolerance on weight from 3-5%

as for tankers i am not in to very much

for example lightest possible fuel tanker with low sleeper cab and basic equipment can have up to 64600lbs of payload

food tanker trailer with same tractor have 67150lbs

on all of this weight you can add 1200-2000kg or 2650-4400lbs if you are going in this 3-5% of tolerance

in itally you can legally weight 44t /97000lbs and 5% of tolerance so that is 46200kg/102000lbs

but for their trucks there is almost no weight controls so lot of them run up to 110000lbs
