So is a driver a crook for cheating the log?

I don't know how you define "crook". But if a driver is knowingly running on altered logs, then yes, they should bear any fines, or penalties.

Yes he is, although I can understand why he does it. I've run hot logs myself, before I decided that I was being taken advantage of and stood to lose more than I was gaining. I learned to say no.
A company will put the pressure on and the driver, for whatever reason, doesn't have the balls to stand up and say no. He might be green, or inexperienced or just plain afraid of authority figures like his boss. That doesn't mean he's a coward, just easily coerced and intimidated...and maybe a little greedy.

I just don’t see log flexibility as a deal breaker, as long as the money is right, I’m alright, doesn’t mean I’ll drive 18hrs a day, but having a extra hour here and there because a shipper or receiver took a little long isn’t a issue with me.

....until you get stopped, and the officer questions the log discrepancy's. Then it's usually "they made me do it'....

In 14 years I’ve never had a log issue, and I’ve worked for all types of companies. My main concern is making sure the money is right on Friday, with that being said everything isn’t for everyone and that’s ok. One thing about this industry, there’s something for everyone.

Like I said, I've done it too so I really can't condemn a driver for making an individual choice. I quit doing creative logging when I was shown how easy it is to get caught.
I was working for a guy that paid us by the hour and as long as the logs were legal when they hit the office he didn't care how many hours we ran. And run we did. We kept two logs, one for the office, and one for payroll. Paper logs of course. ELDs were a long way in the future.
We got away with it for a long time until we were audited by DOT. A disgruntled former driver snitched us off . DOT's basic premise for pulling our hazmat operating authority and shutting us down was the fact that we were logging 65 hours a week and getting paid for 90 or 100. Not just occasionally but continuously. The fines and penalties were enormous. The driver's fines ranged from 500 to 1000 dollars. The owner's fines were ten times that. They basically put my boss out of business.

There are places where you can save hours, and places you cannot.shippers and recievers I show 15 minutes for check in or signing bol's, and the rest I show as sleeper. I ask CHP for there opinion at Banning scale, his question was, where were you, told him watchung tv in the sleeper, he said log it where you are, if your in the sleeper log it that way, and I do .
Fueling I log the actual time from when I pull i to the pump till the pump shuts off, I park in a space for 30 minute breaks, not blocking fuel islands.
How long to take for lunch just depens on what I need to get done.
I do not run over hours for any loads, period.

Looks like someone found an old topic was bored lol anyways I have done my own stupid things for oil field granted the pay was good and they always paid any fines as long it wasn't speeding related they consider it the price of doing business in oil field and had no problems paying the fines 99% issues were equipment issues they knew about was told by drivers but the oil field doesn't care send it and get to work.

Just keep in mind , if you injure or kill someone and your driving over hours, good likelyhood your going to jail for a very long time. So how much money is anothers (maybe a child) life worth.
