I have had EVERYTHING fail. Sunspots will KO a GPS. Cell phone coverage failure. GPS cannot recalculate fast enough. Dispatch has head in arse. Customer is a Braindead idiot. No one answers a phone. Road atlas isn’t detailed as needed. Truck is too freakin big to get to customer. State sent me on a route with a bridge out/road was closed for a parade.

See, the danger comes in when you have one method of doing the job. The more methods you employ, the better the odds that you will not miss.

I might add another thing,, why would I need a GPS or a map to get from Florida to LA???

The first thing you learn(especially in places you described) is that you make sure you ask for shipping and receiving and let them know your driving a long nose Pete with a spread axle shiny hiney!:)

I have never seen a thread go so sideways from the OP.. JMO.. but my personal answer to the OP.. Is because some drivers are lazy and can't read a map because reading a map requires some effort & thinking .. They just are wanting someone else to do part of their job for them
BTW ... I'am 1 of the guys that use to have stop and call for directions long before there were cell phs & GPS I also know to to read a atlas & map.. and can write down directions on paper while talking on a pay phone

So you used old school GPS (guess what GPS also giving you directions, and don't you dare tell me that customer never was mistaken and always was right with what route and making you turn left instead of right )
    And old school cell phone.
So you pretty much anything like real old school!
Cause back in a days people did not have even booth phones at all!!

I would not work for a company that had a stupid rule forbidding me to call a shipper/receiver or someone to get directions and/or confirm an appointment.

Back when I was with Swift they had that rule. Of course 95% of the dispatches had a contact number in the dispatch.....
