I know what your saying, I asked myself if I was the guy doing the hiring would I hire myself, and I have to say if I had 100 other applicants that never had a back problem it would be hard to hire myself even though I know I can do the work. Unfortunately they don't know me from the next guy.
I have to say my doctor never mentioned anything about the possibility of my disc drying up like yours did, and the thought of it is disheartening to say the least.
I plan on being completely honest with any companies I might apply with, getting caught in a lie would be worse than getting turned down as far as I'm concerned. And like you said, it's kind of hard to explain a two inch scar. I'm going to start trying very soon, so I will know about where I stand in the next couple of weeks.
I was furloughed from the railroad on 12/29/08 and just got called back today. I'm going to go take their physical, which will be with a DOT certified doctor just to see if I can pass. I'm still undecided on whether or not I will return to the rails.

You've got a very good attitude Wild Bill and I do believe you'll get a chance. I've posted many many times about getting out to the companies and applying in person and I think you'd benefit the best in doing this. It's always better to explain face to face than over the phone or worse over the net.

Every back is different than the rest. One thing for sure is you've got to know your life will change after the surgery. You can not lift or do the things that you did before that got you to surgery in the first place. I didn't change and went full blown back on the job and to this day I wished I would have done things differently. My disc dying affected me and it may not affect a 1000 more people. No one can say. Besides, it may take a long time to cause problems and you may never even feel a difference. So please don't let what happened to me change your outlook. Just change the way you lift (if it's low back) and/or exercise more with the steps they showed you in rehab.

    wildbill123 Thanks this.

Lifting correctly will be my number 1 goal. I know exactly what caused my problem, it was lifting and twisting at the same time. Never again. I hope the companies will realize that a person who has already had an injury will be more likely to do things properly. I'm going to try and keep a positive attitude and see where it leads me. Thanks for your post, I appreciate it.
