The reason discs are the future is they last so much longer and cost a lot less to maintain. Ten years from now no-one will spec drum brakes.

Well the only place drums still seem to be used is in American class 8 trucks. No car or light truck manufacturer would dream of putting new and improved drums on anything. We know they stop better and faster with much less fade or they would use drums on indycars and the like. Nearly all other continents have switched over to discs for class 8 trucks. I realize with enough effort and improvements drums can do the job well. But drum brakes are known for uneven wear and almost stop working when wet or hot. Thanks for all the good info DaveLV.

Dave what do you think of just buying new rear ends already set up with discs?? The old rear ends are worth quite a bit since they are in good shape and help offset the cost.

Nope. It will cost you more. You will have to add axle housing and carrier cost to that looking at 11-12 for the housing and 28-5500 for the carriers depending onbif you go new or dealer parts reman or thru Weller or VanderHaags or some place like that. Best you could get from your rears is probably 3-500 per axle. You have to realize that you have a 15 year old truck already and sinking 10-17 thousand bucks into it for a fancy brake upgrade is pissing away your money. The truck is at it's lowest market value now, the only lower is scrap. Adding brakes will not raise the value. What is the return on your investment. The current brakes you have have worked for 15 years why change now? If you want shorter stopping distance find what brake shoes you have and cross them into ones with the new hard linings. Bad part is they go the drums faster. Also you will squeal like a school bus coming to a stop.
The one thing I forget and that was more on the engineering side was the abs system. Especially that moniters wheel lockup and can modulate individual wheels. I don't believe that was used back in 2000, so you might have a wheel lockup issue swapping as well. That would be a question for a Meritor engineer. My advise is stick with what you got fix what fails and use that money towards purchase of a truck you want spec'ed like you want.

I'm wondering why you can't convert Eaton axles. My Eaton (Dana) axles came from the factory with discs.

That's too bad you got those. The Eaton air disc is junk. Word from the Eaton rep is discontinued production until stopping distance issues can be fixed. The only one that has any possibility of making it for any period of time is the Bendix Meritor system. They have a couple safety issues to work out then should be back in full production. Believe me, I am an Eaton fan not a meritor one. I think almost all the Eaton products are superior except their disc brakes.

My 2015 Tacoma has rear drums, and the newly redone 2016 does as well.

I just looked at all my calipers. They all say Bendix on them.

Why is that? Tacoma's have the highest resale value of all trucks on the market. They also sell for very close to sticker price as well. It's an application that doesn't need disc when drums will do.
