I was a trainer at Central Ref, making about $90k then the wife gave me the "move out of the truck or move out of the house" talk. I started dispatching for $32k. And they started me high because of my driving experience and the fact I had an MBA. After about a year of stress and getting #### on I said screw it and went back to driving on a local (temp) job. The job ended in August and I thought I would try being a freight agent. So far I like it. 3 months in and I get $1200-1600 every 2 weeks. Not as much as when I was driving, but I only work about 30 hours a week and can do it from home, so I like it for now

When you say dispatcher are you using the generic meaning? Most of the carriers I've driven for the "dispatchers" were load planners that have little or no contact with drivers. These planners were responsible for areas in the country and put loads on you when you reported empty in their area. My main contact was my fleet manager whom really had nothing much to do with the load. They would put fuel solutions on the dispatch.

I ask this question because most planners make more then fleet managers and started out as a fleet manager. Actually as an observation I knew of several fleet managers that had spent time as a driver, but no planner that was an ex driver.

If you like to be bombarded with bs, be stressed out every minute of every day, be on-call 24/7 half the time, and make less $, then by all means become a dispatcher. There's a reason a lot of them don't last...

    That's for sure DTP
I had drivers tell me "man you couldn't pay me enough to be a dispatcher." And I would answer, "I know and I took a $60k pay cut to become one." It wasn't long until my "part time" "rescue the load" driver status moved to permanent.

    DTP Thanks this.

I was a fleet manager for jb hunt, I was salaried, starting pay was $50k. Other terminals paid less. Not worth the headache, not to mention the dirty office politics.

It was an eye opening experience, the managers at my terminal had zero respect for drivers and thought they were better than them
