    Got a question.

Every company that I have ever worked for (46 years) has had "outbound" and "inbound" dispatch sheets. Even when a dispatcher was not on duty, the dispatch sheets were placed out in the drivers room where the drivers could record departure or arrival. Are these dispatch sheets required by law? The company that I now work for, does not have dispatch sheets and there is no record of what the drivers do except for the drivers' pay sheets. I have been thinking about this and thought I would throw it out and see if anyone has any feedback on this. I do not care for "opinions", just the "facts" and the law.

Nope... I've never worked for a company who used "dispatch sheets".

Logs and bills are record enough, for the law/DOT.

Of my 11 or 12 employers over the years, only one used a "sign through sheet", although another one may have required a signature for the envelope of freight bills. I drove for Key Line Freight in the 1970s. Their authority was "to and from Michigan". They had a mandatory check point at New Buffalo, and drivers were required to enter their information on a sheet. It was impossible to fudge very much if other drivers were signing through on the same sheet.

One day, Key Line stood a DOT inspection at their home office. As the inspectors were examining driver logs, Key Line offered the "sign through sheets" as indication of how safety conscious they were. Lo and behold, the times on the sign through sheets did not match all of the logs. Key Line paid a fine of $5,000. Key Line was actually very legal and compliant, but drivers will be drivers.
