I’m considering becoming a freight dispatcher and I’m wondering if a dispatcher has to work under the direction or authority of a licensed freight broker? Or can the dispatcher operate on their own?

There's literally THOUSANDS of stay at home Mom's sitting on the sofa in their robes with curlers in their hair and face cream on, watching Dr. Phil with a kid or two in a playpen, with a laptop on the coffee table doing personal dispatching service for many a man trying to stay moving. Not exactly a very regulated or hard thing to get into.
Opendeckin and BoyWander Thank this. -
Try gettin a job in the industry and learn the ropes for a little while first. I doubt many OO would hire you with no experience. Especially when it's a job they can very easily do themselves without you.jbatmick Thanks this.

As long as you are not booking your own Freight you do not have to go under the license of a freight broker.

When you do it for somebody besides the person your sleeping with it's tougher than you think.ElijahJohn1 and jbatmick Thank this.

Nothing I don't already know, believe me...
I've been back to doing my own load finding lately, given the fact that I've been fortunate enough to have been staying busy with call-in customers and regulars, so only when I have to get to another location to get something home would I need a steady person doing it anymore. Like right now, I'm hunting for something to get me out of New England to Columbia, SC for my RGN for loading this week and delivering next Monday ultimately. Plenty of time for me to do the work of setting up with another company myself.
Life is best for me, when I don't have to look for a load, they find me. That's always my favorite scenario.Baty Dispatch Thanks this. -
What has America turned into ?
American citizens asking permission for everything. -
That is a good scenario.
I had my own dispatch company for 4 years and did very well with one other employee. Life took a different course and I am now a terminal manager for a trucking company. I loved being my own boss.W900AOwner Thanks this.
