It helps, but not always the case... Example:
driver starts driving at 0808, takes a break at 1222, resumes driving at 1253, stops again at 1707, resumes driving at 1738, and stops at 1952.
On paper logs, he drove 10 hrs 0 min -- legally.
On elogs, he drove 10hrs 42min -
double yellow: Can you pls. explain how that becomes 10 hrs. on paper log??
Thx. -
if your pd by miles your pay for those time periods is the same
on paper logs you log on 15 minute intervals hence the even hours as in 1000
on elogs every minute counts if you fuel for 8 minutes it is on duty fuel 8 minutes
on paper it is 15 minutes on fuel
if your a new driver and start on elogs don't worry about the good ole days of paper logs you dont know them to miss them
elogs have there own little quirks with each company to make the most of your HOS -
though in principal they should know every detail of the system fact of the matter is ( ...deleted.... ) is not as well-informed as what we are paying them to do,... a few very minor cheats is usual in any system but what do one do if dispatched where you will not get there before sleep becomes a safety risk & also runs over on the logs but not much place to pull out of the traffic lane ?...is that like needing "low-clearance" warnings on the in-cab electronics such as Gavin nuvi?.....
OP: no trying to walk on your thread but this is important and [ likely ] of consequence in the central issue of your question -
Paper logs have only 4 legal increments per hour: 00-15, 15-30, 30-45, & 45-00. elogs have 60: 0-1, 1-2... So 0007 is 0007 on elogs, and 0000 on paper logs. Every time a strategic paperlog driver starts from a stop & drives at least 14 minutes, he has the opportunity to gain 14 min over his elog brethren.
Now he can go another step further and set his wristwatch to be 90 seconds slow and his radio's clock to be 90 seconds fast... Get in the habit of starting your drive time log based on the radio & stopping nased on your watch and you gain another 3 min each time you start/stop driving... -
i believe that all to be creative writing if only enough to assuage your own conscience
I used to drive down the road 5 minutes for coffee too but i knew i was creative cheating -
I dont think this is about ethics, morals or scruples. Even though cheating is cheating there is a distinct difference between 15 min. here and there and going 4 hours over your 14 or11. One does not have to fear a log book audit. What worries me is fudging the log book and then so me women with 2 kids in the car runs into the back or side of the trailer. One of those passengers either dies or becomes an invalid. The lawyers will disect your log book and when they find a mistake you will be charged with driving while fatigued and they will sue you and then spend time in prison! There are a few law firms who advise other lawyers on examining log books. They even have a few vidoes on youtube.

Go straight to the safety person. They'll put a stop to it in a heartbeat.
Yes today is different and the ramifications are stiffer. But there still is falsification going on. Not that I'm promoting it but fyi, any good creative falsifier knows how and can beat the system if they so chose. It takes a lot of page ripping but it can be done where your logs are presentable with any stop. You just build your logs around time stamps. There is an art to it. This message will self destruct in 60 seconds!

One of the things our instructors told us to take note of was the fact that there are no such things as 'favors' in the company. 9 times out of 10, when u ask to call in that favor u did last week, they'll have no idea what you're talking about. Favors are things you don't get paid for, like lending another trucker an extra bungee strap or such. You got paid to take that load that may have pushed your HOS limits, so its not an actual 'favor'.
Just saying... When you're (I'm) starting out, just do the job 100%. Treat your dispatcher with kindness & respect, and hopefully they'll return it.
