Disregard of Traffic Control Device

I was going up ID 95 in Coeur d' Alene one night and the green mysteriously turned yellow/red even though there were zero traffic going in the cross street. I had to do a modified hard brake, not enough to send a message to the company, but the light turned green again just as quick and a police cruiser blew past me. I think he triggered the lights and when I failed to fail the light, he called no joy and went on for his next victim.
