On the piggy back units, look and you will see they fold the mirrors in towards the doors.
CAXPT Thanks this. -
my company carries oshkosh military trucks on steps.
a standard truck is 102 and doesn't require a permit, but the up-amoured trucks with nothing wider than extended window protection are oversize. -
Getting caught means a criminal citation (class 2 misdemeanor). Not many trucks can have mirrors that are not wider than 102" because most trailers are 102 and mirrors that are not that wide would not see past the trailer. You cant fold mirrors in on toter trucks because they are on a tube that can be slid out to see around oversize loads.

I've got the reg stashed somewhere, but can't find it at the moment. You are allowed 3 inches, per side for safety and securement devices. So yes, a chain and binder can be outside the rubrail on a 102 wide trailer, without being over size. This is how the rolling tarp systems get by with being 108 inches wide, overall. They are considered as part of the securement system, not part of the trailer or load.
SHC Thanks this. -
Gonna need to see that regulation Autocar.
Not that we don't believe you.

So if a guy backs down beside me and his binders hanging an inch and 1/2 over scrape my toolbox I'm going to tell him, "gosh, if you would have followed the rules you wouldn't have done that" ?? you've lost your mind ! Have you ever backed a trailer in your life ? the easiest thing to see is something sticking out a little, why the heck would I want him backing within 2" of me anyways ? you don't know what your talking about.
common sense, yah let's talk common sense here. I pull loads with the binders sticking out a little from time to time because either the chain is too short to put them up higher or the load is max and the only other option would be to put the binder on top. common sense is that scaling a large load is dangerous, hauling a load with a binder sticking out an inch is not. that's common sense.
like the man said, when you're wrong.... well, you guys are just wrong. but keep loving those cops, never admit that like every other form of human a few of them are douce bags.Cetane+ Thanks this. -
Oh, and by the way Cluck. not that it matters, but I do have over 1 million miles under my belt without ever hurting anyone or putting a single scratch on a piece of equipment. But I'm sure your hero DOT cop who took a class for a couple hours knows a lot more about how to drive safely than I do.
-
guess I'm not done yet. a few more things. you know, sometimes they call us "driving professionals" instead of truckdrivers. (Just call me a trucker, thanks. I'm not that full of myself) would a cop tell a judge how to assert a judgement, or a surgeon how to cut through skin ?
Would I tell a cop how to handcuff someone ? heck no ! yet, everyday cops and people like Cluck think it's okay for a cop to tell people like me how to drive a truck. You know what ? just do your job, you can write as many tickets as you want for binders being over 1 and 1/2 inches. But you write me one and we're gonna go to court. and then we'll find out who is the professional and who knows the "letter of the law" as the man said.
But for you cop wanna-be, cop lovin' folks, I will tell you what. When and if I ever get home, which is rare. I sleep peacefully knowing I did someone a good service in my work and performed it safely as I could. Can a jerk-off cop who puts someone out of service and leaves guys waiting for the shipment when he knows good and well the load was safe say the same thing ?? common sense, it's the INTENT of the law, not the letter of the law.Cetane+, TURKER and dirthaller Thank this. -
i'd like to see you go through the colorado scale. and smile as you drive away with that brand spanking new $100 citation you just picked up.
anything over the side of your trailer. makes it a wide load. minus securement.
