I want to buy a flatbed truck under 26000lbs gvwr in Ohio and drive it back to Florida. Do I need fmcsa and dot numbers if it’s not for hire?

No. Obviously you are going to need temporary tags and insurance

The FMCSA doesn't care if your for hire or not for hire. You can have a large horse trailer and will still require a dot number, tags and insurance because of the gvw.

    Not true

My truck weighs 33,500 and I drive it without a CDL or DOT number

Commercial vs non-commercial is an important distinction
