X sttap on lumber (2x4s) wont do anything unless its tarped, also beilve it or not, overtightening your straps will make the bundles loosen up on the center peices, basically it forces the top layer together amd to bow up, thats why hillbilly said to pop a peice of 4x4 under the front and back bundles

Heres a (bad drawing) of what he means

Youll be fine, less enthusiasm, more slow methodical thinking is more or less the combo thats so far worked well enough for me.

    A bit more to this.
You see people working on a load, they make it look easy, seems like they are just cruising along. Thats because they probably have been doing it a while.
They have systems, processes, methods, what ever you want to call it. Everything is done with efficiency.

Don’t worry about speed, your just not going to have that right now. Focus on PROPER securement. Speed will come with time and lots of practice.

Im slightly neurotic about lumber (had it slide on me before) so I always tighten from the middle out, then go back and check. Run 75-100mi and watch my straps in the wind, if I see any starting to move at all, I stop and throw a couple more clicks on the winch.

I spent so much time thinking about securing loads while running down the road. You will too. You'll watch your straps and be nervous about that load about 3/4 of your trip, then after awhile about 1/2 your trip, then eventually you'll be at the point where you can trust your skills and you'll be able to hammer down out of the gate, make a phone call, talk sh i t on the cb, and eat a sammich all while never missing a shift. All at the same time. :D:D:D
