Sorry advising someone to carry a SS Card in their wallet has got to be the worst advice I've ever seen on this website...

Have you you ever heard of identity theft?

You don't need to carry a SS card, but it doesn't hurt. Carry a passport instead. Far more useful on the road and legit if your worried about proving citizenship. Plus you need the passport for traveling outside the US borders.

    Really?

    Refillable ink cartridge w/chip

    And again, really?

    USB stick access

Guess X1's tales aren't so tall....oh, and this printer has NFC so I can select what doc's I want to print from a phone that has the docs on it's encrypted microSd, it also has WiFi direct connectivity to my phone or tablet that I can send stuff to and from my phone (without a router), and can even print directly on cd/dvd/blue ray disks

It might not be a $28 printer, but it's far from a $500 one too

As far as the OP's opening question....birth certificate...no way. SS card is in my wallet, and my medical card and long form in the sleeper since all states still aren't up to speed with having your physical info on line yet.

Two different issues. Yes there are refillable printers out there. There are no $30 ones....
And I'm not saying you can't refill a $30 printer, it's just not designed to. It's a "hack" to allow it by whoever is selling the ink.

Yes there are USB reading printers out there. There are none that execute scripts off the USB when inserted.

I'm going to ignore your smartassed comment. However if for a minute you don't think you can be victimized by this ONLY with a SS card you are living in a fool's paradise. For years my CDL had my SS number right on it. I wonder how many drivers still have this? Your CDL has your address on it, somebody in your town gets your CDL they have your address and can intercept mail. I once stupidly left some old blank checks in my pickup in Charlotte. Some lowlife broke into it and took those checks and used them. I filed a police report but still had those dang checks showing on my credit reports. It has been a while since I last checked, but as of 2010 several were still there. You should ALWAYS have that SS card in your wallet, even at home. I long time ago learned this old saying the hard way. It is far better to have something and not need it then to need something and not have it. A SS card is one of those things that you should never need however if the stars align just so it may become critical to have it. Furthermore, if you are not securing your wallet you are risking a lot more then just ID theft.you can have your cards used. yes, I know you can get most of this money back, but what do you do when you are 1000 miles away from home and your debit card is dead? This is why I get really annoyed at people that leave their wallets at a counter. Those documents in it should be safeguarded.

Not keeping your SS card in your wallet out of fear of criminal activity considering all the other critical documents and cards in that wallet in my view is being childlike.

When I was driving I kept all my documents in either my wallet or my briefcase. Outside of maybe a short trip to a fuel desk or to run in real quick for a coke if I left that truck so did my briefcase and shaving kit. Once my briefcase was gone outside of some clothes I had nothing of that nature in there. I would always have that briefcase with me while walking around the terminal or eating inside. It's called being responsible for keeping your eyes on what's important and NOT living in fear of some crime.

3 Things You Should Never Carry in Your Wallet

The #1 thing you should NEVER carry in your wallet is your SS Card. Common sense...

    I'm done with this thread.

I only need your name and your SS number and I can own you.

Things like Lifelock and other services can not stop someone from really screwing with you because of the simple fact how it can be used for more then getting a credit card or a loan.

The thing about encrypted usb sticks, they can be hacked.

One more point about having that SS card on you. I get most of my medical care through the VA, however, from time to time, I have to go see outside providers. One of them requires a SS card before they will send you back. They need it as a part of that new medical records law that was passed a number of years ago. What are you going to do if perchance you need non-emergency care on the road? Also If my memory serves My next to last physical the clinic wanted to see my card. Do as you see fit, I will keep mine in my pocket!

Absolutely @Ridgeline also I spoke of accountability, you have to keep your vital documents safe. There are many different aspects to ID theft.
