And then after running the chains and doing the couple hours of slow motion you have to pull all the broken links out of your steers, drives.
Do you Chain up, or pull over and wait?

I live in Idaho so I'm used to driving in bad winter weather that requires chains... As far as in my truck goes, I will only throw iron if I'm west bound... Cause that means I'm headed home. If I'm east bound I'll park it... odds are that the chain restrictions will be lifted within 2 hours or shortly after daylight, whichever comes first.

It's not really bad until you have to chain the steer tires because of ice. That's bad.

Wyoming is way better about winter maintenance than they were years ago... I drive I80 through WY twice a week, every week, all year round... If I80 gets shut down for more than 12 hrs it is usually 1 of 2 things...
1. A bad wreck has happened and it is still being cleaned up. This is the most common, the worst that comes to mind happened in April of 2016 I believe, maybe it was 2015.
2. A really bad blizzard is ongoing and is putting down snow faster than they can remove it, this is usually accompanied by extremely high winds... The kind that can throw a tractor trailer like it is a tinker toy.
On more than one occasion I have followed the plows over Elk Mountain. Its slow but its steady and you can see where the road is if you stay within 100 feet of the plow, even in very poor visibility... Such as a blizzard in the dead of night. The plows in WY have red and blue lights just like cop cars. A lot of Plow and tow trucks have CB radios and I have gotten good up to the minute road and hazzard info from them several times.Lepton1, SteveScott and Zeviander Thank this. -
Love following the blinking lights and then trying to see normal, sometimes just slow so they get out of sight.

True to an extent but the secret is knowing where you are in the current weather scheme. It might be getting better soon or it may be certainly only going to get much worse. Donner and Wyoming frequently get shut down or have chains required for 36+ hours. Just go and enjoy having freight to choose from while everyone else is going broke.Lepton1, TIMPTE 527, JReding and 1 other person Thank this.

I'm not driving all day in a storm at 20-30mph taking them on and off.
But, I'll throw iron to get myself across a couple passes and keep my day moving.stwik Thanks this. -
You know the best time to set out the chains and make sure all the links are there and they fit is? Of course a DOT snitch may be watching and is going to bust you for not logging it properly.
