Most states don't let you park in chain-up areas. I've see drivers getting ticketed for it. The trick for places like I-80 Donner is to check the weather and road conditions before going anywhere near it. If you get a storm dumping a lot of snow, they can shut down the pass, or the traffic can be so bad that it can take you 8 hours to go 60 miles. It's not worth going there when it's like that.

That's where I see it happen the most. There's quite a few large pullouts strictly for chain installation. Those get filled up and there's only 1/3 of drivers putting chains on. The rest just sitting there thinking "oh they'll lift it in an hour or so" should have never gone up there if you have no intention of putting chains on. If you happen to be making a trip back to ca. It's quite a sight to see all the trucks heading to Nevada with a foot or more of snow blowing off there trailers and cab. It's almost like another storm. Every time I see it I think geez wonder how many drivers that chained up were put in a dangerous situation because the chain parking area was full of selfish people sleeping

Im smart enough not to get into things like that. The industry is something of a few million opinionated people some of whom will disagree on almost anything. The industry has been regulated (Finally...) beyond what I consider good for it. If they don't watch it, no one will be driving at all.

The east side of Donner pass around Truckee is known to have the highest snowfall amounts in the US on many years. My in-laws lived there for about 10 years before they got tired of living in a snow cave 5 months a year. You have to shovel the snow off of the roof to keep it from collapsing, and the snow drifts around the house cover all of the windows. Dig tunnels for the doors and garage and that's life in Truckee.

Sensible company. No,Ive chained up "thrown iron" about 15 times in the last 5 years. Its just something youre "expected to do".Agood headlamp, waterproof gloves (that you still have finger dexterity in(help a lot). You just Do it quick before the "bone head" pulling the container can "splash you". This is entertainment to them.Lol
