I had two uncles years ago that were worked the "Headend" for the S.P. out here in Oregon.(two things should tell you how long ago it was, First it was still S.P. and second their road engines were gp9's) at any rate before I got out of high school they both tried to get me to hire on,but no, just HAD to learn how to drive a truck. would have been retired by the time I was 50. I think how life might have been different from time to time but don't regret my choice. No, I don't HATE trains, or anything else for that matter( well, maybe lima beans) there is no reason for drivers to dislike trains.

I was one of the last conductor classes for the S.P. Your Uncles were the real deal if they were S.P. guys in the (GEEP) area. We had guys who hired out in the late 50's when I first got on in '95 I had a few of them for training.

His first statement to me was " We aint friends and your not a railroader, but maybe if you listen to what I tell you, you'll keep yourself alive and while we may still not be friends you will be a Rail!!

I looked up to those guys, now if I said that to a new conductor hiring out nowadays I'd be in the H.R. office with a pass to spend a few days off at home to think about it.

Trains pay no highway taxes, burn the lowest grade number 2 oil they can buy, dont have to stop a weigh stations or get a dot level 1 inspection, make two to three times more than the average trucker, dont need number plates or a state registration, and have the right of way always. They dont need jake brakes to stop them but they can still blow their horns anytime of the day of night when entering a crossing but we have to shut our jakes off anywhere theres a cow being milked or a condo on a hillside. No I dont hate trains, just like I dont hate New York, its the yankees I hate.

:biggrin_255: Hi, myself i m fasincated by train's both old steamers , my favorite , and the modern day train, i wanna say orgen mayby or somwere out west theres a hill, i wacthed a very long train, it corscrewed all the way up the moutain, my only regret was i didnt have my vidio camera, but this debate about train's verse truck's been going on since there was buggy days, meaning the freight was hauled in a buckboard wagon , verse trains of that eria, the shippers knew they get more on the train , so they went that route, i made more with jb then reg freight, van, by just going too the yard, rail yard, pickup a dumpy, then go en delv too the jb yard , i could do this mayby 5 times a day too keep me busy, before my reg load,Everett :biggrin_25520:

Why do trains run their brights when meeting oncoming traffic?

I know they can be dimmed, they do it in Canada. In the states, they just blind us.

I dim my lights or shut them off completley and use my ditch lights, when I approach maintenance of way or another train. Is that what your refering to?

IF your refering to a truck, I know we dim our lights in the yards, where we have heavy trucking traffic. Theres been heated words exchanged over that!!!

As far as on the road I've never been in a position to blind a auto or truck unless they were on the dirt road next to the right of way and then no I would not dim my lights I want to see if they are putting something on the track for me to hit or trying to derail me somehow.

When people are near the tracks we get very paranoid, suicide by train is becoming very popular as well as insurance fraud by me destroying automobiles left on the track.

Some sickos even like to lead horses or cows onto the tracks to watch them explode when they are hit!!

Run out west along 2 and 52. The train runs along the highway. I flash the brights, but it does no good.

Just turn all of my brights on and hope for the best. Usually cannot see because of their lights.
