Good question! A better question would be why do they even need high beams? Even if they could see the obstacle they still couldn't stop the train in time to avoid hitting it! So why even bother blinding people? I know there are some stretches on highway on interstate 40 that runs parallel to the train tracks and the train runs high beams all the time!!!
Do you guys really hate us?

My point as well. If the deer runs out, they hit it. If the car runs out they hit it.
If the track is missing, they hit it. -
are Railroaders as regulated as Truckers? (hours of service / appt. times / clueless dispatch / forced to sleep in cold or sweltering conditions / dealing with the bad attitudes of shippers and recievers) I believe Railroaders have a great union, if Im not mistaken.
I always wanted to get into Railroading, just seemed you had to know someone. -
Ratzenberger or whatever the name shuttles the train crew to motels.
-
Im not familiar with the area, but just call the railroad police or get ahold of the road foreman they are called, that runs that area and let them know. Use the word unsafe, public. Gets there attention.
I can't speak for them, but that shouldn't be any problem.
Each class 1 railroad is a multi billion dollar company they dont like law suits

Kind of hard to do when most of the time you have no clue what county you are in or sometimes, what the area code is. Or even have the number of the railroad police or the railroad company.
-
The lights are not just so the train crew can see, it's also so you or a pedestrian can see the train coming. A train is so big that it is hard to judge just how fast they are moving. A train doing 60 to 70 mph will sneak right up on a person if they don't see it coming. It happens all the time. As far as high beams go, the railroads have been sued for just about everything you can imagine. Whenever they get sued they make a new rule covering whatever they got sued for. And then you have the feds that are always creating rules and laws as far as train movement. Trucks have scales the railroad has feds hiding in the bushes with binoculars trying to catch someone making a mistake.

Roadmedic I've been trying to get some info over on the expediter thread, I wonder if you might be able to shed a little light over there ? I don't want to hijack this thread. Thanks

H.O.S./ yes but we get H.A.T.(HELD AWAY TIME)if you leave me away from home terminal for more then 20 hours without putting me on a train back home I get paid X amount of dollars for every hour you leave me away.
Appt. times / only Z trains
Dispatch for us is god, they have the ultimate authority they control the traffic and signals. They dont dispatch loads and stuff like that tho.
Train crews don't deal with shippers, were not even allowed to open the car doors. I spot the car up on there spur track, conductor ties it down and we leave no paper, thats all done by office staff.
No when we die on the law (HOS) like mentioned earlier a van comes and gets us and takes us to a Hotel, U.P. owns there own Hotel chain we stay in those 99% of the time
Union and Retirement are well its works like this since like the 40s or when ever Railroad retirement act was made. Your spouse get a retirement for putting up with you being a railroader. You get yours and she gets a small one extra.
Hope that gives some insight Ike and you being a trucker is a plus, Id say at least half my hire on class was OTR truck drivers.Ike Thanks this.
