Do you work on your log book while doing your 10 hour break?

I brought this up in another thread where a 1-2 year time in driving forum member waited till her 10 hours were up before she did her log book. To add to this the team was late on a load due to shippers loading wrong and a DOT inspection. Thus the team was awarded a service failure for being late with the load.

My question you you all is this:

How many of you when on your 10 will work on your log book. Do you stick to the "rules" and wait till your 10 is up? Or do you rewrite (color) and redo days (more comic book activities) while you're off duty?

Now we all know working on the logbook is considered line 4 so lets not C&P the rules! BUT we do know that at the END of the day when you pull those brakes you are doing a CHANGE OF DUTY STATUS and should be drawing that line soon after parking! If a DOT cop were to walk up to you and ask for the logbook (highly unlikely but I'm dealing with fellow truckers who do pull stuff like this out of thin air! LOL) while you are sitting in the truck stop or rest area you are actually in compliance the same as when you head to the sleeper, draw the line to line 2!

I'm just asking! This ought to be good!

Even tough I drive locally, and still use a log book, I always do my logs before my time is up..I usually go in about a 1 to 1 hr 30min before I'm scheduled to leave to do things such as. Catch up on my log especially if I did not do it when I was done for the day. Do my pretrip, and if I need fuel do that too.. I have also had to add air, water, oil in my truck and do it all before my time is up.. Then when I do leave I go from line 1 to line 4 for 15 minutes, then up to 3 and the wheels are rolling.. If I did every thing by the book, even for local driving I will us up all my hrs faster, then needed. I do for the most part work up to 14 hrs a day, just not OTR.

First off, you're assuming that everyone cheats on their log. We don't. Some of us happen to be very honest and log it truthfully.

I try to log as I do. Sometimes I forget to draw a line back to driving at the end of a live unload etc: so I'll make a note of the time and then log it at my next stop.

According to my instructors, what I've gathered on here, and a DOT officer you can log anything from one change of duty to that current days logging when stopped.

I make sure I don't go more than one change of duty.

As for going to the sleeper. Okay.......how hard is it to draw a line before you put your Dr. Denton footie pajamas on and go to bed? Not much

    1nonly Thanks this.

I can see it now, The one who NEVER messes up the log or fudges.
"Hmmmm I got to go pee,
    so I'll get out,
oh.... wait. I need to log from line 2 to line 1 while I am out of my truck.
    Comes back 20 min later.
Hmmmm should I take just 15 min out of my sleeper or 30. Less than 7.5. Yep. 15 min.
Now I'll log back in to my sleeper. Oops I can't do that because while I am writing in my log I am on duty. So I need to flag down to line 4.
Man I wish I could hold it for 10 hours! I never get to drive"

    Mooniac and doubledragon5 Thank this.

I drive, but I also log it's not that difficult. And yes I do log when I get out of the sleeper to potty. :biggrin_25521:

Oh wait....................I forgot..............real truckers are the ones who forge logs, break the laws, and gripe when they get a ticket. my bad:biggrin_25522:

When I was OTR, very rarely was I in the sleeper for the whole 10hrs. Yes I showed but most of the time it was for no more the 8.

But to write in your log, You are now working. and if you are working, you need to restart your 10 hours. after all. writing in the log is effort for work. thus it is work.

I got to ask...WHY do you log going to pee? If you are off duty L1 or sleeper L2 do you really think they care? Do you actually put 15 minutes down and flag it as "Pee time" Inquiring minds want to know! I just hope you don't have weak kidneys as you'll be stretching out that 10!

I just hold it for 10 hours so I don't have to go on duty to write in my log. LOL
