I gotta say I really like the new 1 peice nuts with the snap ring for wheel ends.
I spec everything that way now . Just touch preload and all good . Makes it very easy for setup .
I agree with grape , a proper set wheel bearing is a proper set bearing. So to claim 300% increase in tire wear is Ludacris. Unless of course there throwing in a 3 axle alignment as part the package!!

Are you talking about the Pro-torq style with the orange snap ring or the Conmet preset plus style? I've been curious how people like the the Conmet preset plus style.
-
I've been using just the pro torque style.
-
I also been using the pro torque Stemco nuts. So far I'm am very pleased. I like that you torque them to spec and end up with just a little bit of preload.
Set it and forget it! -
the guys says 300% increase. but even if it is 10% increase in tire life than is it good? i see there are costly preloading bearings as well.
-
I did it by feel for years when I started out wrenching because that's how I was taught. Now I use a dial indicator to achieve .001" - .005" end-play and feel it is the only way to properly setup wheel ends now.
-
Im a firm believer in 0 end play.
Only reason the manufacturer suggests 1 -5 thou is because there is such a fine line between no end play and to much preload. This way there not left holding the bag when stuff goes sideways when someone applying to much preload.. No one wants to be held accountable now a days .
Its not really rocket science but some how people seem to still screw stuff up.snowman_w900 Thanks this. -
Hello All! I'm in marketing and sales with the company that invented and manufactures Doctor Preload bearing adjustment tools and Temper-Loc spindle nuts. Not sure where the 300% increase in tire life comes from, but I'm thinking it may be a typo- we have reported that a number of our customers have reduced their tire spend by 30% when removing all endplay thereby eliminating uneven tire wear due to loose bearing settings. That is true. If anyone wants better information, I'd recommend visiting our website launched in September 2016. Just hate to see misinformation get spread around. doctorpreload.com
Thanks, and we'd be happy to answer any questions.swaan Thanks this. -
Since this thread was resurrected....how exactly do you measure 0.000" of endplay?
-
You don't.
Technically it's just a touch of preload. There for , no end play. Or what you like to call 0.000 .
It's a feel type deal I have got very comfortable with. Have never had a issue and or a bearing failure doing it this way.
Heck, don't think I've even had a seal fail doing it this way. Seen lots seals leak from loose bearings thou.
