    Honk honk everyone,

    Quick question ‍♂️

If I take a 10hr sleeper break on Thursday from 2 PM to Midnight, can I use that break to extend my 14hr clock by combining it with a qualifying 3hr break on Friday ending with the start of 34hrs off duty? I believe the regs says I can.

In other words, can a shorter break of the split sleeper be at the end of the split and NOT need a following longer sleeper split break to qualify the preceding extended 14hr clock? I don’t think it’s needed.

Otherwise, am I supposed to get back to my home terminal and actually log a 7hr sleeper berth period before I can leave my truck and go home? I’m not going to do that.

I can’t seem to find any specific examples online but will anyone with knowledge or experience please help me clarify or point to something specific about this?

Here’s what I’ve found so far:

(Split Sleeper HOS - Guide & Examples | Switchboard - Technology for Transportation Fleets)

    And
    (Federal Register :: Request Access)

Am I interpreting this wrong? Thanks

2pm to midnight will do a 10 hour break, so no need to worry about a split.

But to answer the question, yes. Minimum of 7 hours in the sleeper, with minimum 2 off duty with both equaling 10 hours is fine. And bith sides of the split pause the 14 hour clock.

So I can start the day with a fresh 10hrs in the sleeper and extend that day’s shift beyond 14hrs with a 3hr break and not need another 7hr sleeper break to qualify the extended 14hr shift?

Not sure I understand the question.

If you get 10 in the sleeper there is nothing to extend as you have a fresh 14 hour window.

Yeah it’s the next day with the 3hr break in the 14hr work shift that’s being extended. Essentially, can I extend that day with just the 3hr split without adding another 7hr split at the end of the day because I’m done with my work week.

My company says Omnitracs puts my log in violation because it won’t count the off duty time at the end of the day as equaling a split sleeper. Therefore, the extended 14hr shift becomes not valid afterwards and not during the time being extended.

That is correct, because you utiluzed a 3hr break, at the end of it, you need 7 hrs sleeper, without that you just worked over your 14

Is it dumb, yesish, but thats the way it works

I’ll take a swing at this so correct me if I’m wrong and I don’t remember the numbers correctly of what happened

10 hour is just that. Nothing special
    8/2 split doesn’t extend the 14
7/3 split does extend the 14

I’m not a 100% how the numbers work but I was in an ice storm and decided to stop and I had maybe 2 hours left on my clock

I was on the phone with a friend who knows these rules inside out and when my stop time hit 3 hours all of a sudden I had like 5 more drive available
He said something like “ Oh yeah, that’s the new 7/3 ……”
And with all that. If I decided to continue on my 14 would have turned into like 17-18? Or something like that

The 8/2 also pauses the 14, its more useful to think of it as "pause" than "extend"

Just always remember there is a glitch in this system the most drivers don’t know about. So you have your system set on a split make sure you log sleeper berth. Even if you’re returning home. I did that once. Earlier in the day I’d done a three hour break, I had the split option still set. I drove back to the yard. Still had time on my clock. Selected “off duty” went home for three days. When I came back and got in the truck and started driving I was in violation from three days earlier. Lol doesn’t matter if you’re off duty for an indefinite amount of time if you did not do the actual sleeper berth portion of that. Seems really stupid to me, that’s how they set it up. So even if you’re going on home time you still have to stay seven or eight hours in that sleeper berth.

Not a glitch, its literally the way tge rule is written

Now if you ask "should there be a way that a 34 supersedes the sleeper?" imo yes, but its not written that way
