It won’t count for anything. There is a good reason for that. A semi with a trailer is an entirely different beast than driving a four-wheeler. It is like having to learn how to drive all over again.

Add to that, there is a difference between intrastate driving and interstate driving, which could mean regional, and then there is OTR, which tends to entail all 48 lower and possibly Alaska, Canada and possibly Mexico, too. There is nothing like the experience of learning other states....in fact often in the applications, they want to know how many states you have been through, since lighting systems, traffic control systems, signs, topography, and road widths, etc varies in different states that you need to get experienced with. When I came retired from a job even with previous tractor/trailer intrastate driving, I still had to go with a Mega, to get my OTR spurs. Then you get to look at specific freight you want to haul. Some may require 2 years of experience hauling say, flatbed and machinery, which is specialized to their customers, and they won't take a guy who hauled nothing but coils and lumber...so there is a great variety of experience as someone mentioned, that get's lumped under the CDL/CMV label. Welcome to the jungle...grab a seat it's going to be an interesting ride. :)

Depends on the job, buisness owner and why they are asking for the experience.

I only had about 1.5 years on a cdl class a when i bought my truck, because i had done deliveries in a 26000 lb truck for 2 years at previous job (chauffers license + dot med card), the insurance company he used accepted that as enough "driving and driving safety related experience" to put me over their 2 year threshold

Each job will be different, find out why they are asking for it

Agreed. I was speaking to a man that is looking for a driver to haul portland cement and potash for him. he is wanting at least 3 years of driving experience and somebody with at least 2 years of operating the blowing equipment. There are a good bit of things involved in driving that involve skill sets other than just driving. This is why sometimes you see these things are worded differently.
