Does anybody here use a dispatching-service?

I ask because I am thinking about starting one up, and am curious to know how they operate.

For example, how they charge, how much they charge, what services they provide, etc.

Nope, but they call me all day offering their services. Then act like I’m a ####ing unicorn when I tell them we do our own dispatching

Yep I get the same thing. Would never consider doing it unless I had a lot of trucks but then I would just hire someone I could over see.

    No.
Just sharp shooting… You don’t know how they operate but want to start up?
This is exactly why I don’t trust anyone with my business.

Everyone wasn't born with Infinite knowledge. That's how you learn by asking around. This ain't rocket science. If you can add helpful information, if not understand everyone is trying to succeed by all means.

Do you speak with a thick foreign accent?

Are you willing to sit around all day and call owner operators and ask “for the business owner”

Can you stay absolutely quiet for up to 30 seconds when the business owner asks you who you are?

Once the 30 seconds is up can you mumble some complete bullchat about how they find loads or if they want to make 13k a week with your dispatching skills?

Are you willing to lie to get their business acting like you are the Michael Jordan of dispatchers?

Are you able to get hung up on within the first 10 seconds of a phone call just like the other 775 callers offering dispatch services?

What about factoring? Shouldn’t you consider your competing with those entities also offering the absolute best in factoring to keep those floundering businesses afloat?

Best of luck and please take me off your calling list…

Why would I pay someone to run my truck?

I do, for the time being. He has 15 years experience most of that is driving. And been a fleet owner for about 6 years.
I don't worry about him keeping the better loads as I go places he don't send his guys. Eventually I will dispatch myself. But currently the service is paying for it's self hand over fist.

Out of curiosity, what's your background?

And if you don't mind sharing, what is his fee structure for you?

Also, you say that it has worked well for you, and that it is worth the cost...can you elaborate as to how it has been beneficial?

I can understand your position against those people that operate that way. I wouldn't appreciate their "service" either. Nor do I plan to operate anything like they do.

But, I do believe that for some owner-operators, a good "support services" provider (to handle items such as dispatching, paperwork, etc.) would be appreciated.

To be fair, I am not a complete stranger to the logistics industry. I don't know it all, but I do believe that I know enough to do something with. A little about myself...I just turned 30. I started working in the logistics industry back in college, as a courier for FedEx. I then went on to supervise for UPS Freight. It was mostly an LTL operation, but TL-contracted-owner operator-drivers were used on the daily. All of that exposure, has made me very familiar with the planning, terminology, equipment, HOS, parties involved, etc. having to do with trucking. I eventually got my CDL Class A too, and have driven some over the years.

Currently, I have a really good "office" job.

Even though I already have a job, I want to have an additional source of income. And since I know logistics, I want to put that to use. I am not wanting to get rich; just want to make some decent supplemental income. And to have that extra source of income in case of a layoff/termination. You just never know.

My initial thought was my own brokerage, but am now thinking that offering support-services such as dispatching/billing/etc. would be more feasible given the numerous big competitors in brokerage.

What I am thinking now, is just finding a few owner operators to work with. My fundamental service would be dispatching, and as I learn more, I can begin to offer additional services to owner operators if there is interest.

As of right now, I am just continuing my research...market research, in an effort to learn about what is currently out there.
