Nice, seems many of the drivers I knew that stretched their cabovers, had a hard time getting any weight on the steer.Gatordude Thanks this.

Sounds about right TBH my lonestar is getting 4.9. But im also 80K+ nearly 100% of the time on a mack end brick too. Friend has a 352 with a 3406B in it doing feed in an end dump and is getting around 4.2.
Weight speed and a brick of a trailer do funny things to MPG.Vampire, OldeSkool, Feedman and 1 other person Thank this. -
Jeez guys, super cool stories. Hate to hear the 4 mpg being more common, I would happily settle for 6-6.5mpg I feel like that is a very affordable sweet spot.
I would be willing to bet that driving style has a heavy impact on the MPG factor with these old rolling cinderblocl shaped trucks. -
Aero dynamics wise they are actually better than a conventional. Sure they are big and square but they don’t cause as much turbulence. With a conventional it hits the hood rolls up and hits the windshield. If it’s a Pete, kw or big international or classic fll. You also have breathers, stacks and sleeper sides all creating turbulence and resistance.
a cabover doesn’t. If you’ll notice all modern conventionals(Aeros) have ditched breathers and side mount stacks. Gone to wide cabs that match sleeper widths and wide hoods with very small fenders.Last edited: Mar 26, 2025

I’ve never done the math, just by what I’ve been told, while I’m usually mid 5s with my hood I’ve had tanks low 4s like when I’m rolling across ND at 90.
we run…. Let’s call it chunky too so if you only want to run light weight with 35-40k in the box you will probably do betterGatordude and Rideandrepair Thank this. -

The last of the fleet cabovers got surprisingly good mpg’s. The Internationals and Freightliners with a 11.1 series 60 “bus engine” set at 325-350hp. 1800 RPMs, 62-68 mph top speed, were known for 7 mpg. They idled all the time. Never shut off in winter, still got 7 mpg. Pulling a van, with a roof fairing. Short wb. They broke the wind once. Mpg as good, as good or better than an FLD. or 9400.

Yep, i noticed that, kinda hideous but it is what it is, they took all the character out of the trucks. That being said, would the k100e be less aerodynamic since it has that sloped rise for the second bunk or better because it IS sloped? the w900s still run that slope style sleeper, it must work for em. AND if i had that slope style K100e could i also put the cab fairing for the W900/T600s that made it match up to the height of the dry van or is it a different size than the k100?Vampire, Gatordude, Sons Hero and 1 other person Thank this.
