I don't own a gps.....I prefer to do it old school...maps, atlas and phone calls....then I back up my in city direction using map quest ad google earth......I like the feature they have where you can actually see the area you are going into....it's saved me some pain
trucker_101, walstib and panhandlepat Thank this. -

I never get lost.... they just sometimes move the streets around on me.
I've found the city street maps that you can pick up for free at the State rest areas are better than the ones in any atlas or pay for at a truckstop.Precious, rocknroll nik and trucker_101 Thank this. -
Do I get lost? Oh yeah!
Instructions to a destination that include stuff like go to the third red light, turn right - are just wunnerful - especially when some yukk sticks an extra traffic light in there at some road that dead-ends.
Really great road signage... can't see-em street sign names, no sign at all on exit ramps. Signs so close and hidden to an exit ramp, you don't know its there until you go whizzin' by.
It's all part of a trucker's day - but we manage to get there. Good truckers deal with all of that. Great truckers manage to do that and get there on time.
When you're off-route and blundering around, make sure you're watching for "No Trucks," "Weight Limit" signs that are below where you're at, and especially the "Low Clearance" sign with a number less than you're height. That'll get you a special mention around here - delivering a bridge while taking your truck to the barbershop!
So here I am, blundering around at 3 AM, and I've got about half an hour to an unload appointment. It's dark. It's foggy. No c.r.a.p. its foggy! I can't even see across the road, and I've just come down a mountain to an interstate. It's so #### foggy, I have to get out to walk around just to find the sign pointing out the ramps - and still have no idea where I'm at. Hope I can find my way back to the truck, its so foggy!!! Some guy rolls on by on the interstate, sees my marker lights... on channel 19... "Hey, ya lost??" You betcha. Gave me some great instructions to get me where I'm going.
Thanks Bro!rocknroll nik, chicagocity and panhandlepat Thank this.
