The picture on the left is the correct pine setup that works with my truck, but the wider 3 pin setup on the right is for the scan tool i purchased. I am not sure what to do or what to even search for to get the correct connector....
Does Caterpiller make 2 different 9 pin connectors?

2016 and newer use the green 500kbs 9-pin which is backwards but not forward compatible with the 250kbs black/gray 9 pin. Caterpillar also has their own proprietary 9 pin they use on their equipment.
BoxCarKidd and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
so do i just get a dremel and file down those 3 pin walls? Also my truck is a 2002 Caterpillar engine

apparently there is a "J1939" port (I have) and i am not sure what the name of the other type of port is?
-
I cannot answer that but would be afraid to do that. The on road Cats have a standard connector. My scan tool has a different connector for off road Cats. Call your scan tool supplier.Bean Jr. Thanks this.

my on road CAT has the J1939 connection. The cat diagnostic tool however has a standard connection...

I don't speak Chinese
BoxCarKidd and Hammer166 Thank this. -
The one on the right is the offroad connector( proprietary cat data link), pin assignments are different than the truck j1939 standard(that's why they made it so you can't plug it into the wrong one) so it will not work with your truck.TowHaul Thanks this.
