You know this DOT physical thing to me is much ado about nothing. Just about everything that can cause you problems can be traced back to eating habits. I have told drivers for years, want a clean physical eat right, get plenty of exercise and rest. I got back home from Georgia late in the evening yesterday. I had an appointment at the VA hospital this morning. When I was on the road my blood pressure was always borderline and my weight caused me to have sleep apnea issues getting my physical. Now that I have 3 years of eating right I have lost weight. My blood pressure is good, my blood sugar is under control and my weight is down. In my time driving I have seen drivers so large that I was always amazed. I seen one guy I swear was 600 pounds. The FMCSA is serious about these medical standards.

Edit. (Post immediately below was pointing to post immediately above; my timing was off so I reposted below.)

Yes. Hence the thread. But the opening sentence "much ado about nothing" is a bit misleading.

I agree to the post above but until such time as they can get their health under control they must deal with the situation as best they can.

Thanks for all of the feedback regarding the BP.

I am primarily just trying to understand the "system" better. It seems from responses thus far that there is some confusion as to what is reported to whom and when. One poster noted that the CDL holder must report the results of a physical to the state, while others have opined that the medical provider conducting the exam updates it directly.

This much I know for sure, the school I attended required a pre-enrollment DOT physical, the results of which were provided directly to the school by the medical examiner. I don't know whether the examiner provided it to the state via an electronic database or not. I was asked for that medical card at the DMV when I obtained the Class A CDL. Other than as just explained, I have not personally "reported" the results of that physical to the state.

My original question was asked because I had read conflicting info here and had verbally heard conflicting discussion on this issue elsewhere.

here's what you do,call your local DMV and ask them they would know for sure.every state does things differently.here in Sioux city you take physical then take the card to the DMV they register it takes less then a minute.I drove for a company and they registered my med card online.when you start another ompany you'll be taking their physical because their insurance requires it.I have spoke to many carries and they all have said the same thing.so if this card is good for your school then use it but once u start a company be prepared to take another physical.

I am prepared, and every company I have spoken with requires their own.

I'm just curious and thought someone here might have solid facts about the system. The DMV doesn't seem clear on the process either, at least not here locally, but I'm sure no one will find that surprising! :)

I would imagine the medical examiners update the FMCSA who they are registered with. It is entirely possible that this is just an internal thing between the FMCSA and their registered examiners to ensure everything is on the up and up.

The DMV may not have access to any FMCSA system or even if they do, it is just easier to have the driver bring their card in directly. That is why it is best to notify the DMV directly as they are the most important ones in the process. They have the power to suspend or even revoke your CDL, so don't rely on anyone other than yourself to notify them of your med card validity.
