No-one ever asks that of me. With some of my good ones that I get the same loads over and over, they're not paying triple goings rates, but in a situation where I would have to charge them that i respectfully decline and usually connect them with another truck closer by. They know what I do to random brokers. They know better than to ask me to work for nothing.

It's the same ol same ol with few differences really. How quickly one catches on who can really say? It took me about 6 months to get into some good consistent rates and looking back I realize how lucky I was in that capacity was really tight, and for quiet some time too. The thing is had I not been willing to be so aggressive on rates I might not have realized it. Loads go for nothing sometimes even in when capacity is tight. Which is ashamed but if you've got an operator that's getting stepped on they don't know what they don't know. And if you're always running for so-so rates, coupled with the mindset that big money loads are extremely rare, then you're never asking for big money and you'll never really know when or if you can get it. The thing about being what a lot consider too high is you will get a great feel for when you can or can't. And it never enters your mind it's crazy to ask for any price even if the brokers one after another act as if that is so.

So anyways, was reaping a tight market. Then that dried up but managed to get by and learn more about more areas. Made connections. It was over a year before I ever posted my truck available. Up until that point I got loads and rates the hard way, calling. Posting up became my favorite way makes it so much easier. Then I dabbled with emailing. You cut to the chase with no bs there. That's a favored method as well. It's the simplest. But I may send 20 emails before a score. Just depends on how busy things are.

RC pretty much hits the nail on the head here. I think the ability to really command rates is something you either have or you don't have. I am sure it can be studied and mastered but its the "rush" that comes from negotiating a deal at Home Depot, a garage sale or with a broker. It's a game.

Also, have no doubt that those who get paid the most for what they do, do it well, cross every T, dot every I and make no excuses. Period.

The rush is what I live for. I've said here many times before it's like a drug. The high goes away though when you fire up the truck and actually go to work lol.

Nah, you get to think about the pay while you're driving, I do anyways...lol...it's not that intense jumping around high fiving thing, like when you put the pressure on em to close the deal and they said "ok", but more just sort of a satisfying mellow, "yeah, that was good" kinda deal...it makes it fun to drive the truck, makes you want to hurry up and get empty so you can do it again...lol...

I used to but I don't anymore. I am smiling when I drive but it's all about the score and that rush.

You don't want to be "friends" with a broker, it's not in your best interest. Be friendly and professional, but draw a line and keep them at arms length, you'll be glad you did....

It's a good feeling when you go for the hookset and drive that puppy home, there's that pause.....while they're thinking it over.....and I'm quietly praying for them to take it....and then they agree...lol...sometimes it's hard to maintain your composure till you're off the phone...lol...(I always look carefully at my phone, to make sure we are in fact disconnected before I celebrate...lol...)

Each one is different, you just need to get relaxed and comfortable....don't waste your time with clowns, don't be a jerk, just don't waste time...talk carefully and clearly, don't use a lot of words, don't be weak at all, asking "can you?" is displaying weakness...posting up is good, cause it immediately put you in the strong position to negotiate. Takes away their confidence, they're calling you...why? Cause their phone ain't ringing...drop that big number on em', and listen carefully to the reaction....

What's bad is when they cancel talk about high to low lol. My first score of 2014 cancelled 10 minutes after I booked it boo hoo lol. It happens at least I was at home and not deadheading that way. And then look forward to the next one which was not just a score but hit haha!!
