And that's the truth, once you negotiate for awhile you'll find yourself negotiating anything and everything...lol...

lol, I will go and read your stuff, I always research stuff, really! I don't work hard and i believe my bottom line is quite good. what you feel is working hard is easy for me, what i feel is working hard for most other drivers is easy for them. i am not making excuses. I feel its almost a vacation and if went back to short runs and docks and waiting i would have quit by now. no excuse.... just reality. not the brightest way to work a truck but again its better than not working or putting someone in the drivers seat now. i really enjoy my route except my last short trip(1,000 or so miles)getting back from new england to the chicago area that i haven't found a good regularish load or broker. so getting paid triple on a short load I can see. i am only interested in one short run getting back towards home. when i become a big boy like you or put someone in my truck i will focus on the pay and areas i need to be instead of heading to the corners on long runs. so why don't you run your truck on your six months off, since your pretty much a legend in your own head? or do you put a driver in it

hes right, if he delivers great service at a premium price, his reputation will follow him, not only for service but for price.
brokers will know they can count on him but better pony up with the cash.

You haven't done enough homework. You can work off loadboards 12 months a year and never suffer a lack of work if you don't mind the down swing in rates. For me I choose to park when things are slow and could likely only get in another 50-60 days worth of solid rates. Ask any one truck owner who has attempted to hire a driver and let that one truck support two families - how well that one turned out? Never mind finding one that wouldn't cost you money. My legends are well documented. In our office they see exploits from several of us so routinely that it's same ol same ol just another day another dollar no biggie.

"We'll meet or beat any advertised price"....lots of places have a negotiation mindset, you've just got to coax them a little....and you'll need somebody who has the authority to negotiate with, the chick chewing gum and playing with her ponytail can't do it, but I'll bet the store manager can...

Our American culture produces a retail mindset, the price is whatever rate the store has placed on the pricetag, we accept without question the price offered, and the evidence is the fact that the average American searches for "sales", and never tries to negotiate terms. Brokers prey on this mindset...
