That's why I do the job I do,12 hr shifts Mon-Fri starting at 06:00,most weekends (all Sundays) and all the major holidays off.
I make ok money because I hustle, working hard and fast can be the difference between getting 2 loads or 3 loads a day for instance and 3 pays a lot better than 2 when it's mileage and assessorial pay.
Some jobs pay better but averaging $200 a day and home every night for dinner with the weekend off is priceless to me.

I pulled into a place where we do a drop and hook a few weeks ago. A couple of guys with day cabs showed up at the same time. While in the shipping office they got onto the topic of traffic. The one guy starts talking about how he doesn't try to rush because he is paid by the hour. The other guy agreed for the same reason.

Got my bills, dropped the empty and hooked up. These two are still inside yakking. Somehow they both managed to get out of the drop yard ahead of me though. One gave the tires on the trailer he hooked to an obligatory kick, the other didn't even do that. Just hook and go.

Though they weren't in any hurry they sure weren't wasting any time on something as silly as even the most basic pre trip on the trailers.

Paid by the hour, the mile, the day or any other way those two would be ones to do as little as they could get away with.

As you can see the chip truck is a daycab but I'm not hourly.
I kick the tires and look for damage, check the lights and look for trailer damage then double tug even after looking at the kingpin and then I go.
I know that's not a full pre-trip but our company is pretty good about maintaining the trailers and sends mechanics out on the weekends to the various yards for full inspections of all equipment.
If something doesn't feel right with a trailer I'll ask for a different trailer or to bring it into the shop for service, never a problem.

The day I see a driver do more than that I'll crown him driver of the year. We all do it about the same.

As an hourly paid driver I do not take short cuts (they come back & bit you in the a%=) or break laws. Nor do I hurry. Just do the job in a safe and timely manner. There's a line of truckers that would be happy to make $30-$50/hr + bennies.

Actually, higher pay can have just the opposite affect. I have seen it. I worked for a corporation back in 70s, that would be a job to kill for today. The company bent over backwards... to please a dozen drivers.

But, it all started with one or 2 complaining, and it got so bad, I could not stand to be around those guys. Half of them quit in one year. After that, the company started to take perks away, and of the replacement drivers , almost no one complained, or left for another driving job.

We are like children, to much makes us bratty, and unbearable. I witnessed it. Even worse, I tried to talk sense into some them. Waste of time, and never again.....

One can not pay enough to get people to care. It has to come from within. Look at the sports world, some guys are paid millions of dollars a year, and slack and throw careers away, or just up and quit.

Even the highest paid driving job here don't make that.UPS route delivery drivers start out I think 23.50 an hr.Heck id be happy at 15.00 an hr.What im finding is pay based on exp. They pay for your drive time and very little pay for the labor involved like unloading and im not talken lite stuff either.
