Now THAT would be a depressing thought! I'd rather think that your drivers stole a couple of Knight trailers, than to think Knight was taking over your company. Back when I worked for them, Knight was ALWAYS "losing" trailers. Apparently they had no way of tracking them, although I have heard that has changed.
They'd put out trailer numbers on the QC to "be on the lookout for," with a reward attached to it! Of course, the trailers would almost always turn up, either where some driver had more or less hidden them for future use, or torn up broke down and un-roadworthy. I'll always wonder though, just how many of them got south of the border and had a new paint job put on them. . .
Does it mean anything or not?

At the end if the day freight needs to be moved wether it is contracted by your company or the one next door. A trailer is nothing but the mean to transport the goods. That's what I think.

Companies can swap equipment and they do. It got me into trouble my very first run hauling trips. The dispatcher told me to drop so and so trailer and pick-up an empty. I drove around the desert for a couple of hours before I could call the dispatcher and then he told me it will be a so and so trailer. Not even close to our company trailers. Should have been in Reno when the sun cames up and was not out of Beatty yet.

Muñoz Trucking is a power only operator for Werner. We pull a lot of their trailers out of Laredo into California. Once I pulled a Transportes I. Soto Y Hijos trailer (complete with Mexican registration) that came out of Mexico to a factory in Magnolia, AR loaded with machine shop hardware that was coming back to the US after the factory closed in Mexico. An odd reversal of what usually happens, lol.
On my way back to Texas I was trailed by an Arkansas State Trooper for a long time! -
I wouldn't read to far into it, if I were you. I am an independent running my own trailer under my own authority. I have ran loads for Schneider, Landstar, Knight...quite a few. Perhaps, just as in the case of myself and Knight, it was a matter of a last second load from one of their direct contracts that had to go today and they did not have a driver in the area that could make the pickup. Or in the case of Schneider, I know it was from being a "hot load" that didn't pay enough for a team, but 700 miles in overall mileage, their truck wasn't gonna get there in time. Landstar asked me to pull one of their trailers on a round trip drop and hook...the name on the trailer isn't the be all end all. Now, if the name on the tractor door changes, then you can be worried.
