I wouldn't believe anything "heard" from a recruiter. First, second, or third hand! So Bigron you mean to tell me that you own several million dollars worth of equipment and have a lot of money invested in your product and customers and you are going to hire a student driver with no track record and absolutely no experience in handling a commercial vehicle over a seasoned, over the road driver, with a good track record, is refined in his driving and is an expert in getting in and out of tight places?
I didn't think so! Neither will anyone else who values their assets and company! Your recruiter friend is full of poo poo! You should call him on it!
Does local exist

I've run local/regional since coming out of school in '97. Started doing sideload beverage delivery, then worked for a company that delivers to McDonalds for about 6 mos., been with my current company since Nov. '97 working local and regional. I'm gone about 3 nights per month.

Yes and you are one of the few lucky ones. You aren't going to tell me that companies prefer newbies over experienced drivers though!
Would you?

Recruiter friend ???? Lol I started driving local out of school for lancaster foods and then went to conway !! And yes I talked to a recruiter who told me that he would never hire a otr person because they might not want to do the job !!! The reason I asked him is because my friend who has 6yrs otr asked me about the job !!! Just like some companies won't hire a local driver because he has no otr exp. You should know this being a driver some companies will hire who they want to hire over any experienced person because some want to train a driver their way . that's the world of trucking !!!
-
You may find an occasional person that wants to train someone from the get go but on the whole experience counts. Coming out of trucking school you are not prepared to drive, you are prepared to go with a trainer. Schools are there to help you obtain your license and prepare you for training. Most schools probably give you less than 10 total hours behind the wheel during your schooling.
(not being a "dic##ead just discussing with you)

Is a written test at the DMV all that's needed for a Class B in Florida, or is a driving test also needed? I thought I had read that a driving test was also needed, but I'm not positive on that.
-
All states require a driving test to obtain a CDL,.......A or B it dosen't matter,..
-
Yea, your right I did get lucky in the sense that I don't have to go over the road and I'm making just as much as local hourly tractor trailer drivers around here. The way I look at it, the school just added credentials. I can still move up to a tractor trailer around here if I wanted to, but I think taking everything into consideration I will stick with what I have for now. -
I see it posted here a lot that you don't need to go to school to obtain a Class B. How do you take the driving portion without having access to the proper vehicle? Every Class B job I see posted requires you to already have the license.

I know chomp !!! Its just trucking , I have been turned down for drivers that had more exp then me. I remember my first time out with a 53' !!! I think I hit a pole leaving the yard and went down a hwy in md that nooooooooo trucks are suppose to be on !!! Lol . That was the only time that I heard a person say that they would not hire a otr guy. so let's keep on helping these new drivers out on here with the exp that we both have.
