It really depends on the company. For instance, where I work you either need 1 year OTR experience, or 2 years tractor trailer experience. If you were to run 2 years with an LTL company, you could get hired on here.
Does LTL count as OTR experience?

I'm reefer and it may not be quite as bad on the van side with all drop and hooks and daytime appointments...but the trip planning, parking, clock management and just living in a truck are universal to anybody running OTR and probably not as much of a thing when running local.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
Will appreciate their low pay.Texas_hwy_287 and Gearjammin' Penguin Thank this. -

I see talk of forklifts and such when discussing LTL. Am I right in thinking that the driver is also directly involved in the loading and unloading, kind of like they do in other local gigs?

IMO, P&D local is not looked at as OTR experience, but linehaul is.
That said, any company that doesn't hire a local driver based on "inexperience" has no idea how skilled that driver just might be.
I'm 20 years in and see local drivers and shifters at work doing magical things that raise my eyebrows all the time. They can be some of our best.Texas_hwy_287, alds, MACK E-6 and 1 other person Thank this. -
