In september of last year I got started as a shuttle truck driver. I hop in a day cab at the start of the day and shuttle trailers from yards to doors and vice versa. Locations are many dozens of miles apart. Basically a yard goat but more expanded, and requires driving a day cab on open roads.

I'm 1 year in and looking for a new job, but does this count as cdl a experience? Some companies are vague as to what counts as experience. I think it does given it's tractor trailer driving, requires a cdl a, and tight turning/backing.

Many companies will count that as local/city driving. On your applications list it as local/city driving.

Some companies will count it toward CDL experience but not toward OTR. There is no shortcut to researching EXACTLY what your next employer requires for their job.

I had 3 years OTR, then worked regional, home-daily in a daycab for 18 years. One OTR company wanted to treat me like a brand new CDL driver since my OTR was not recent & my current job paid me hourly & I was home daily. It depends.

CAUTION: The current CDL job market is pretty weak (from the driver's perspective).

Employers now.....for the most part....are being much more picky/selective....in terms of who they interview....& later offer a position.

Suggestion: if you don't already have those CDL endorsements (tanker, hazmat, & doubles/triples)...I would recommend that you start getting them....& sooner, rather than later.

Those endorsements will make you more marketable, distinguish you apart from those that don't have them -- & they show prospective employers that you're serious.

    They are also door-openers -- & money-makers....

Absolutely, you are head and shoulders above most applicants. Fact is, you probably have MORE experience than someone just rolling down the road. In the past, it never hurt to pad your history a bit, but I think anyone would hire you on the spot. Good luck.

Yes and No. I have 3+ years' experience, all of it local based in northern NJ. I've probably bumped more docks and navigated more tight, crowded urban streets than a typical OTR driver, but I've never really had to worry about trip planning, finding somewhere to park, or managing HOS over multiple days. It's a different skill set.

What your your doing is great experience !! You'd be amazed how many times i've seen places that i'd thought would be rough getting backed into and then watch a yard dog snatch it and back it like no big deal . Your way ahead of many !
