I have had good luck with heelers. If they bark or growl you better be paying attention.

I have a Red Heeler (aka--Australian Cattle Dog) and have bred them in the past. They are, by far, the most well-behaved and adaptable dogs around. They tend to attach themselves to one person and be totally dedicated to that person.

They are also scary smart. I had one that used to bounce off the walls when I mentioned going for a walk. So my wife and I began inventing different words for "go for a walk"---Go for a hike, take a trip, walkies, saunter out, slide on by, do an outside, meander out, .... after about 17 tries we ran out of words. The dog learned them all ! That plus he knew no less than 57 other phrases and commands. It was literally "scary smart".

I had a blue "Booby" short for Blue Bear 11 years that was my pal. He would count, took hand gestures when working in the pasture. Always had my back in the Alley. Doc my new one is more hard headed, he has more excited type energy but he is getting better lol. I have no doubt that he has every bit as much loyalty as Booby.

Yes, some dogs are eerily smart and some have premonitions that are scary.
The one in England at the nursing home that knows which patient is next to die and sit's by their bed that night. The dog has never been wrong. Saw this on a science channel the other day.
My daughter, at one time, lived 11 miles from my house. She knew when I was coming to visit even though I would be just on my way there and still several miles away. Her dog would stand by the front door inside the house and vigorously wag it's tail and whine. Daughter would call me and ask if I am on the way to their house and then laugh because her dog already knew. It's crazy what some animals can do.

I had a German Shepherd that never in her life had jumped the fence....til she turned 8...she came to the front door and layed down....my brother went to leave and she stuck her nose in the door....mom let her in and she went and laid in my dads chair....shortly after she started breathing really hard....she was trying to tell us something wasnt right and we didnt catch it in time, she was having a heart attack...
.one of the hardest things ive ever done in my life is bury that dog...
