I'd rather crash in my lane than take the ditch. If that oncoming car in my lane wants to avoid a head-on, they can either return to their lane or take the ditch. With my luck, if I chose the ditch so would the oncoming car...so there'd STILL be a head-on crash, but now you're on your side in the ditch instead of upright in your lane. Screw that.

Apply the brakes. Try to shed as much speed as you can before the impact, and if a crash occurs, have it happen in your lane.

I was coming out of Orlando, cutting across hwy 50 trying to make my way back to a truckstop in Wildwood. I saw a 4 wheeler cut a Covenant truck off. The driver cut the wheels, lost it, went out into the woods into the water. We (drivers) stopped, ran out to try to save the driver. She was gone before help arrived. The car never stopped.

was running up 59/20 at Cuba, Alabama. Saw a 4 cut a driver in a cab over off. The driver mowed down 14 trees. Car never stopped. They had to cut the remnants of what used to be a person out of the truck.

A few few years back, one a superload, one of my pilot cars got a call about her old man being involved in a wreck. A car and he cut his wheel and did a 30 ft drop in a semi. Broke his back. Driver was charged with the accident AND the hazmat spill. My pilot car believed that he did the right thing...until they had to pay for the hazmat spill.

Had a pickup try to overtake a car on the twolane of 287 in Colorado. My mom was in the truck with me. They came right at us. Mom screamed and I held the wheel. The pickup wound up off-road and a Darwin winner got killed. Mom was amazed..."You didn't even swerve..."

If I'm going to die in an accident, you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be someone else dead with me. You people had better educate your families.

I guess it all depends, last week in MI. traffic slowed drasticly in front of me, I was off the accelerator and on the brakes when the ford van in front of me took off again. so, I just got off the brake and ready to speed up when he locked up his brakes so hard his tires smoked. we were doing about 35 or 40 and the middle was pretty flat with no obstrucktions, so off I went. I was able to keep rolling and pull back on the highway. If it had been a steep ditch, I probably wouldn't have, I don't know. I probably should have stayed on the brake longer but they took off so I thought I was ok. But also the chance of having to run off the road is kind of an occupational hazard, or so it seems to me.

just this last week I was going south on 421 towards Sanford,NC
I saw a bridge ahead and a small blue car under it with the 4 ways on.I moved over into the left lane as it pulled out in front of me.Then as I went by it,a yellow 4 door state truck pulled out of the grass medium. He sped up and about 50 yards later he hit the brakes and wanted to pull back into the grass medium. He had 6 people in that truck and I was standing on the brakes and laying down on the air horn.I was about to hit them when the little blue car went by and I swerved hard back into the right lane barely missing them both.Yes,I had some bad things to say to the idiot in the state truck.
but I would have done anything not to hit either of them.

I wish both of them was willing to do the same

A lot of tough talk and truth be told I hope no one has to go through a fatal accident I always feel the same about holding my lane regardless and was put to the test in buffalo with a nice size buck he was waiting for me on 80 and I had no choice but to chop him down after the incident I pull over and a deer horn, rip up bumper and blood was the evidence. Took pics and went to the nearest petro. Yes it was scary but I stayed true to my training and hold that lane.

I will agree with your statement about wildlife, having nailed a few deer along the way, I never think twice about it. dead deer. Human life, on the other hand, I was looking at a rear end accident and wanted to avoid it.

Am I the only who noticed that the drivers who elected to take the median in that mess in Wyoming a few weeks back wound up being the ones with the least damage?

Personally, if it's wildlife, I lift the throttle and jake it but hold my lane. Sorry Bambi, your mom's not coming home tonight. Cutting the wheel suddenly and maybe losing my truck seems like a lose/lose. Now, if a busload of nuns or something loses control in front of me and spins out blocking lanes, and I KNOW I'm going to hit if I don't change course, I'll lift, aim for a soft spot, and drive as far into the crash as I can. Weigh the consequences. Hold your lane, wreck your truck, AND kill someone, possibly including you, or ditch it, damage your truck, and everyone lives.

You folks who say you would hold your lane KNOWING you're about to kill someone are out of your friggin' minds.

If YOU are in the wrong (following too close, not paying attention, etc.) then you SHOULD take evasive maneuvers to protect the innocent...and if you wreck all by yourself, it's your own #### fault.

However, what we're talking about is when you are doing everything right and somebody else tries to cause you to wreck, you should hold your lane & apply the brakes...and if you kill 'em, so be it.
