The Keen privileges are more about time,if you notice they are loading unloading before 8am,have there machines tied down and ready to go before any other trucks are allowed to start.Get their bills at 8am and gone.Same with the guys that bring the JLG stuff in,so they can make 2 rounds a day,to Pa and back.I unloaded and loaded most of my own stuff there, unless its craned on/off.
They have relaxed the loading specs over the years.Back in the 70's,80's,the stevadores had to load you,you couldn't drive anything. Also if it rained,no one got loaded, period, union rules.Unless you pressed some cash into the right hand.

I had a shipper that had a little problem today.

Yesterday I got a call from a guy that bought a item from a auction at a plant we were working at, he asked if I could load it for him if he could get a truck. He calls back and said there would be a truck there at 10:00am. Truck finally shows up at noon and it's a Ford dually pulling a gooseneck.

It's a 8,200lb piece and he has a 14,000lb trailer but the weight on this machine is concentrated in about 6'. I ask the guy about it and he just shrugged it off and said load the machine. We got it loaded and because he was so late, I told him we were going to lunch so I didn't see him chain it down.

A couple of hrs latter I get a call from the customer and he is upset and sends me this pic. It fell through the floor of the trailer and pretty much turned over on it's front.

Now I didn't see him secure the load but I suspect he didn't have it chained well enough. I did tell him before we left for lunch that he needed to chain it up high because it was top heavy. I think the chains you see at the top in the pic were added after the mishap to at least get off the interstate. If it had been properly secured, it should have just fell down on the cross members and it wouldn't have turned over because the back couldn't have came up in the air.

This was a broker load. I don't know who is going to end up paying for this. If I were the customer I'd go after the trucking company but I'd be surprised if they even had the proper insurance. Our responsibility was to just load it so we are in the clear. IMG_0764.JPG

Wow. Thats a dam shame. That could have really gotten ugly out there if it had had fell off in the middle of the highway and hit someone or someone hit it!

Looks like they sent a BOY to do a MANS job!!!!

Yes it would have. I actually think it turned over is why it broke through the floor. The driver is trying to claim the floor gave way is what caused it to turn over, I think just the opposite is true.

Last I heard they were trying to find a crane to fish it out. Driver was on I24 somewhere near Chattanooga, TN when it happened. I could have been coming off Monteagle mountain.

That's one thing I enjoyed about that job. Loading and unloading myself certainly beat having to wait for the forklift operator to get back from his 75th break of the day.

I had help loading Terex TA-40's more than once, but regardless I was in the cab driving it.

Those are certainly fun to try and get on a trailer by yourself.

Only at 75? Must have been early in the morning still.

Had a guy unload me with a boomlift the other day. Took him over an hour to take 12 skids off. He couldn't just unload me real quick but instead had to take each one off then drive 2mph through the jobsite to a building to put them inside on a sunny day. Had he told me he wanted to do that I would've recommended parking me closer.

I love the rare occasion I get some drive on equipment. So much faster to load and secure and rarely does it involve tarping. :D

Wow. I can unload 12 skids a hell of a lot faster than that with a liftgate and a pallet jack.

I quoted moving a used Morooka once. I forget how much I said.... Maybe $3000 no tarp. The broker called back to say I got the job but I how much to tarp? I said another $3000. They pretty much ended the bidding process but it worth it to hear him blow his top
