You're making the assumption that the DG fleet will be successful? That's quite the assumption.. there is a reason that companies got out of the trucking business... DG is fixing to figure that out the hard way.. I don't see them being any more successful or profitable than the megas.. the megas at least have places to spread the costs.. DG fleet will not last long. Their accident rate are just as bad as the megas and they have no means of support.

Well, hold on now....I suppose that DG is trying to lasso and get a grip on accountability........if the trans fleet becomes one with the store, under the same company control, then , in theory, the trans end of the business is more accountable to say, the stores needs......because they work for the same entity of control.......thus , in theory , would alleviate some of the accountability problems......

I imagine Dollar General is getting weary of hunting down Werner, JB Hunt and whoever else is running their accounts, for claims issues and such , that they are gonna take a stab at getting set up for a better " in- house" accounts and claims control.....as it seems to be perpetually a built in issue with the nature of DG' s operational characteristics

this could also be in "select" areas, and not country wide. as a "pilot/feasibility program"

they are probably leasing the trucks, maybe buying the trailers, and if it does not work out, simple, keep what carrier(s) they already have, and expand that contract...

when the bean counters do all their actuary work, a final decision will be made at that point and time....which could be 1 month, to 3 years from now..

    You better believe I am....

Mark my words,(And I said this going back nearly 10 years now)

A Lot of businesses try to outsource transportation- And many times its a success.

But,For Time sensitive logistics- Having your own fleet makes more sense in accountability and MOST importantly- The Quality of the Driver (Hire)

Private Fleets Hire a Better quality driver, What I Mean by that is a more experienced driver- and a more clean Driver (Appearance wise)

private Fleets Pay far more Superior than any Mega carrier. Megas Look at THEIR bottom Line- NOT The Drivers.

When You hire Trash to serve a Dollar store account- You Have Late Deliveries- Damaged Store property- and just a stressful environment from start to finish.

Of Course,These are generaliations- But you get the point.

Im a Huge supporter of Private fleets who haul their own products- More Professionalism from start to finish.

I think that as another Poster mentioned , the turn-over is a huge expense , and DG is gonna improve ,or at least TRY to have better control over this.....and you know what? It WILL work.....and heres why........take a look at who is running the accounts......J B Hunt........okay......the J B Hunt dedicated driver gets tired of unloading these trlrs week in, week out....so what does he do? He TRANSFERS ........he doesnt quit J B......he simply has a "easy out".......without actually QUITTING his job.......so.....when I think about Dollar General hiring its own drivers specifically for THIS work......the turnover rate will decrease dramatically........and we all know what an expense that represents.......werner drivers have tge same kind of flexibilty to transfer as J B Hunt drivers do if Im not mistaken ......

I also happen to realize that there a ton of ex- Marines, Army, Navy and perhaps even Air Force personel who want to drive ,but dread the thought of becoming a fat , overweight driver............they actually would THRIVE at a job like that , but heres the kicker......D G had better pay........top dollar.......and get the store employees on par ......

Theres probably quite a few ex- convicts that would be great as D G drivers.....the non- violent weightlifters.......they wouldnt be intimidated by showing up in a neighborhood , nor would the workload be too much.....perfect.....gotta get recruiting the right folks.......advertise......search....they can do it if they do it right......

The reason that these companies got rid of the trucking aspect is to get rid of the accountability and liabilities From Drivers, to Trucks, to the liabilities of accidents and incidents.. its cheaper by far to outsource transportation to transportation companies.
