Lots of money to be made pulling dollar general freight. I did it for Werner. Your hand unloading 40,000 + pounds of freight by yourself everyday. Then you you cant sleep at night because Werner trucks have that idle system that automatically starts and stops the engine all night long for air conditioning , actually voilently shakes you a wake all night long. Possibly the worst job / company i ever worked for. Stayed for 2 months and that was at least 1 month to long. But yes lots of $ if you can take it.

Will Werner still have trucks pulling DG trailers out of Bessemer,AL since DG is hiring their own drivers?

I've still been seeing mostly Werner trucks doing this , but I have noticed more and more Dollar General trucks popping up

Also , you can order a new freightliner that looks like the old style . Freightliner calls it the "Classic Cascadia"

On the topic of dollar General....there is another going up in a small town near me. Everything else is contracting except the junk stores. Sears, Kmart, JC Penney, toys-r-us, bon ton, Macys even Wal-Mart....they blame online shopping. I do see allot of Amazon vans running rt20 (major truck route I drive daily) but that's not the full story. The blue collar worker has been crushed for decades. The days of the man working the union factory job with good benefits and pay....and mom stayed home, those days are over. Today I was in arcade, ny a small town near me. Another temp service has made that town a home. So now one small rural town has two temp services providing low wage garbage jobs with low pay and no decent benefits. Slave labor.

At almost 60 grand a year I'm doing allot better then allot of other people. I'm just gonna grab some gears and keep on truckin. Heck I'm home everyday, who cares if I work 6 and sometimes 7 days....its steady....im done by 3pm usually. I have time after work.

My first trucking job was indeed Werner and I would have done dollar General. I did the 3 months it took their inefficient system to complete my training and was going to get assigned a truck. I went for home time after 8 weeks and never returned. They sent me a post card asking when I was going to return....lol. I threw it in the trash.

I did a variety of different local jobs the summer following that experience, but come fall I settled down at Walton milk hauling. I ended up with a fantastic route that I didn't expect, rarely do I have to go to a plant and deal with dreaded wait times.

I'm glad I did what I did. The worst things I have to do is climb on top of tankers to monitor loading (not spill) and seal the truck. Also handling a milk hose that weights nothing, complete paperwork and pull samples. With my previous plant experience this job works really well for me. I have never been the cause of a rejected load. Things that cause load rejections.... Temperature, expired wash tickets, improplery filled out wash tickets, lack of seals....for me simple to avoid.

I have no regrets considering what could have happened. Busted up body, backing accidents, driving in congested cities, delivering in the ghettos.

No thanks. I made the right choices.

Well I really hate to break the news too all of the Trucker Einstein’s that the DG private fleet is not hauling the general merchandise to the stores ( dry goods). If you would look the DG Fleet is pulling Reefer trailers. That is because they deliver the cooler and frozen items to the stores. Insurance from day one plus 2 weeks vacation and other benefits. No slip seating only run within a 5 or 6 state territory of the Distribution Center home for your reset . You are paid for everything you do . Hopefully this will kill some of the rumors .
