Ok long story short 45 yrs old going to change careers cdl-a seems to be best option at the moment. i dont mind driving (pistachios and music are the perfect companion for me). i live in columbus ohio about to put my 2 weeks in already found a school and can start Monday after payment. any and every advice is appreciated especially anyone with central ohio knowledge as far as what are best starter companies to work for, kind of trailer worth making the most money with etc. I have some money saved so my immediate plan after proper training and comfortable experience will be to buy truck and become owner operator. thanks
Done with manufacturing time for a change

Being in Columbus, just about any trailer would do you justice. When I hauled flatbed, all of Ohio was a moneymaker. Lots steel plants to haul out of if flatbed sounds appealing. If you go flatbed, call Builders Transportation in Memphis, TN. Other fellas will chime in with a whole bunch of ideas here before long

What is the school? What is the accreditation. If it does not have a national recognition, Your choices of employers will be limited. Thats not bad, just makes things a bit more interesting.
Decide what type of work you want to do. Dry box, refers, flat or ?.
some might not agree with this part. Say you want to go do Flatbed. Being in Ohio, look at a year with Maverick.
They have good training, your going to turn a lot of loads and tarp a lot of them. This is getting a lot of experience, real fast.PapiFlex and bryan21384 Thank this. -
Are you single or married? Do you have any young children? I ask those questions. A trucking career maybe good for you but is it good for the family.jammer910Z, tscottme and PapiFlex Thank this.

For flatbed, look at Transport National in Cincinnati & Youngstown. This company hires new cdl grads.

160 Driving School is where ill be learning from. No preference yet as to what type of work i want to do yet as i have never drove anything like this before. I just know that I can drive for long period of times without getting tired so figured this would be a good option for me.

Since you start school Monday; submit applications now; it's not too early.
This way you'll start work the day you finish cdl school.faux_maestro and PapiFlex Thank this. -
I do wife and 4 kids at house at the moment. Very busy household why my short term plan is to buy truck and become O/O. It seems regardless of career choice in order to get ahead in life i will be investing insane amount of hours, why i'd rather do it this way then for some company that im miserable in
