who uses melting agents. cuz from what i saw last year. no one was using.
utah has access to salt and it's the only state i know that can actually clean the roads. everywhere else i ran into was a mess. after the plows. didn't get the pleasure of running through wyoming after a storm though. so couldn't say about that one.
and it was another post that mentioned 3 rails and what not.

Meh...Whatever There is the chain police and rule book readers that sit on the side of the road blocking people while they fiddle F around and there are those whose hang the crap and get down the darn road.
The fact that you say you should unhook to chain! who unhooks to chain their Drives
A double as we call it or 3 railer is just as easy as a single!!
Always hear about people that say they park it instead of chaining and the reality is
If your going to run the west coast you better know how to chain a truck. And figuring it out a 2am on the side of the road is not the time to do it.
If you cannot chain in 15 minutes you probably should have stayed home.Last edited: Oct 30, 2012

well, i for a fact can NOT chain in 15 minutes. but last year i had low 22 chains for hi 22 tires.
this year i got 24's. haven't chained yet to see what i got. but i plan on using wood if i have to take the truck off the ground. the trailer has bigger chains then the tires. those are ez. -
Wyoming spreads red dirt on their roads. They have plenty of it to spread .

That would be me, and I'm pretty proud of it. It took me 45 minutes to chain the drives of a truck the last time I did it, and that was back in '99 to get out of wet clay (still needed a tow, waste of time to chain). I don't place my safety above anyone's freight. If they needed it that badly, they should have ordered in before the weather went to crap. I'll park and chill until the roads are safe, or find another route.
And before anyone decides I'm chicken, know that I run I-90 around the lake on a regular basis and have yet to shut down because of weather around here. Even when I was just driving a 1300 lb. Toyota Echo. I've seen plenty of big rigs sitting on their sides around here because of wind coming off the lake and slippery road conditions, and I've kept right on going (after making sure the drivers were alright, of course).NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Ever wonder why Rainier and Hood have snow on top year round and our Utah mountains almost completely melt in the summer? Same elevations.

Lest any of you forget the unrecovered cost to clean up ur mess when you wipe out is another reason why chains are required. Ins.can be sued for damage but sometimes the litigation costs more than the repairs to the guardrails and light poles.......
Something to think about........NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
its not getting up the hill i worry about, i like the chains being on to get down the other side, they keep the trailer behind me
NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Minimum requirements are a single set on one drive axle of the tractor and a set on the trailer.
Maximum is both axles chained with singles and again a set on the trailer. This used to be called Modified Max years ago as a test for some period of time. Caltrans determined there was no difference in trucks who got stuck so they eventually adapted the Modified Max as Maximum period. 3 rail chains are no longer required by caltrans.
Either trailer axle is OK, even staggered, one chain on one side might go on front axle then on the other side the rear. As long as there is one on each side. -
"Modified Max" has been the Max requirements for some time now. Back in the day, when they first tried 4 singles on the tractor, as apposed to a set of 3 rail and a set of singles, they called it modified for a period of time for testing trucks traction. Eventually they adapted it to their Max requirements. 3 rails are not required but of course still allowed if you choose.
