When I drove for Keen transport I received a $50 tip for delivering a WWII landing craft to a collector in Utah. It blew me away.

I was talking to the wife about this topic a little while ago and now she's expecting a tip when I get home.

Why tip the porter doing the showwers?
Most of the times they are just wiped down.
They are paid an hourly wage...

Yes, I tip the person who cuts my hair, she isn't an employee of the shop, she rents the space from the owner of the shop. Yeah, I pay a fortune for a hair cut, I go to high end salon for men (it's my only luxury in life). For the hair cut, nexk/shoulder massage, brow/ear wax, etc. its $66.00 + a $6.00 tip. I've been going there for 4 yrs, found out 2 yrs ago, that she pays $800 per month to the owner of the business for space/chair rental.

As for the OP and the subject in general, I use truckstop showers maybe once a month, I guess I've never even noticed a plate/jar/etc. for tips. But going back to BW9's comment, most showers are marginally clean, and even the one's that are clean are still a little eye raising (except maybe Little America). These places I see with tip jars, I don't tip unless they do something extraordinary for service. As for the truck wash, 3x per year I take the truck in for a special wash (the company has a service that comes out every two weeks that does a mediocre job). The guy who was getting his washed at the same time as mine went out and tipped the guys $40 (there were 4 washers). Hmmmm, his truck sure was cleaner than mine was, I noticed they didn't miss spots on his like they did on mine, he also got a better power rinse on his, less window/mirror streaks.

    Want a tip?
    Buy low, sell high.

My feeling is the person accepted the job, knowing what the pay was and knowing tips don't usually exist. If they don't like it, they are free to find another job.
Trying to coerce people to tip to traditionally non tipped jobs is just pure socialism.

Let's face it. We work in an industry where we are surrounded by people in service related fields. If you feel compelled to tip everyone that is already paid to do a job, you will be broke by Friday. I don't know about you, but I ain't rich.
You are suppose to give to receive. But that doesn't always mean money. I help people all the time and donate to causes. So if you think tipping makes you a better man... You're da man!

Like a poster said earlier, there's certain jobs that don't make a full wage and rely on tips and you should always tip those people. Off of the top of my head, waitresses, bartenders, pizza drivers and valet drivers are the only jobs I can think of that fit that category.

I would guess the cleaning ladies make a full wage.

It probably is a good idea to tip your barber though so they don't screw it up next time.

I will leave a tip if the shower was clean. No partially clean, but clean. I leave a dollar bill.

It's not about how much the person who does the cleaning makes. It's my way of saying thanks for giving me a good, clean shower to use. I've seen them busting their butts trying to keep up. I'm sure it's a thankless job because you look around at some of the slobs who are drivers.

I don't know the person cleaning or why they have a job that I wouldn't do. But I do appreciate a clean shower. And in my appreciation, I'll leave a dollar. There ain't a damnn thing wrong with doing so.
