I look at my local paper up here in Canada and there are currently 17 driving jobs listed in the surrounding area. My city is only 90,000 people. The next major city north of me is Calgary, AB. I just went on the government job site which most employers put ads on and I typed "class 1" into the search and got 42 truck driving jobs show up...everything ranging from long haul to local.

The next major city north of that is Edmonton alberta, and a quick search turned up 82 jobs in Edmonton and surrounding area for drivers.

For as many years as I can remember, trucks & railroads have been bickering. What bothers me is the stupidity of it all. Neither business can succeed without the other now-a-days.

If trucking & railroads wish to bicker, let them join forces against the barge traffic on the Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, and Columbia Rivers. The only taxes barge companies pay is sales tax on their new equipment. No IFTA, no other fuel tax, to road use tax (2290)....nothing except sales tax on new equipment.

Trucking & railroads should consider that for a while!

I saw the CSX commercial and I noticed all they hauled on that commercial were containers, what moves those containers after they offload them?

I haul paper Recycled back to the mill and new out, I noticed that people still seem to buy the smut off of the mag racks even more so when they are out of work, they have more time to read the gosip. I feel safe for now.

I think people misconstrue the lack of freight and lack of the freight the want to haul...
There is freight, it's just probably not the freight you want to haul or maybe they don't have the right set up to haul.

Look, the simple truth is that every industry in every corner of the world has it's up and down...Truckers have been arguing over this very topic long before any of us were around and they will continue to do so long after we all are gone.

You just have to save money in the good times, so you can weather the storm when it hits.
